Our daughter was in school for six weeks in Florida. We picked up and moved to Tennessee. Admittedly, Tennessee is not the northeast, but even they look fabulous next to Florida, and the crime is a lot less.
Don't do it. You'll get down there, have a change of heart and then have to leave, and leaving Florida isn't very easy for anyone, right now, family doc or not. In the meantime, your kids lives and education will be disrupted. And who knows what "tricks" they could pick up. For the most part, we found the kids in Florida to be "fast."

Hiknapster: not to hijack, but we just sold our FL home, and bought a home back in OH. So exciting. Glad to be getting back to seasons, good people, good times.

You may want to consider crossing the river and moving to NJ. NJ has some of the best schools in the country. Just stay away from Camden, Trenton or Newark.

Jersey does have great schools. On the whole the northeast is where you want to be for education. To heck with weather. After you have lived in both extremes you realize that weather is a horrible reason to move, unless you are retired and moving to a low-crime area.

AMI is Anna Maria Island. Beautiful spot; actually it's a vortex. Once you drive over the bridges from either Cortez or Manatee, you'll feel like you're in a different world. Gets even better around Bean Point.
The island is not without it's problems but has been a pretty safe place to raise children.

I have to agree with Ladywithafan. Anna Maria Island is a beautiful place and the people are very friendly. It is very rear to have crime in AMI, and when there is they investigate so that it doesn't affect the other AMI residents. People down on the island really do care. It's a fine place to raise children.
Another good place to raise children would be North Port. It's a fairly new city, and the crime level is low. It's a city with a lot of young people. I believe that would be to your satisfaction as well.
Good Luck to the OP!!

thanks for the suggestions for NJ. Taxes are way high there, family docs don't make any more than here, and I am familiar with schools there bec. sister is an asst. superintendent of schools there. Can't afford housing, taxes, etc. there. Malpractice is still very high there. Any docs down there who can pipe in? Would love to hear input. We want to live by sea. So yes, we seriously considered Ocean City area (we always vacation there and were married there) - but cost of living / cost of practicing medicine is still TOO high in Jersey. Unless we would be in a completely rural area, in which case schools can be iffy/poor, and we already did the rural thing in Amish country, PA.
I see many school districts offer International Bacc. programs, esp. in Brevard County - anyone with experiences with these? Thanks again, all.
