I think it's silly to compare areas, since it's all based on our personal experiences. However, I lived in Lee County for 15 years and have been in Indian River County for less than 3 months. What a difference! People here actually stop when you're walking to your car to let you pass. They stop to let you turn, and they wave! For almost 3 weeks I've been trying to deal with a broken toe and I can't count the number of people who have stopped to ask "are you okay, Ma'am?" or "Let me carry that for you." No, I'm not on LSD, folks. This really happens in Florida.

Still, this post is only based on my personal experience, since there are many nice people in Lee County too. After all, I lived there!

By the way, crime seems to be down almost everywhere.

Thank you!!! I said the same thing many times, it is WAAAYYYY better over there on the east coast as compared to here in SWFL. I lived in Vero Beach, Palm Bay, Melbourne, and I saw a heck of a lot more courtesy over there as opposed to here.

Yes, population discrepency is large, but even if Asheville/Buncombe County had 1/10 of the population of Broward, wouldnt it be reasonable to think you would hear of these incidents occurring in Asheville every once in a while? Lets say Broward Co had 15 incidents similar to this one per year, and with 10 times the population, wouldnt you think you'd hear about these incidents in a place like Asheville maybe once or twice a year based on the population comparison? But you dont. Conclusion: it happens a lot more in S FL for a number of reasons, and yes, one is the difference in population, but there's more to it than that.

but all and all we really do love it here and am glad we did the move....another chapter for us

I am glad you see it too. I know CLT isnt the same place now in 2009 as it was 10 yrs ago, but it isnt as bad as S FL. I'm glad you like it in Boca Raton but the driving habits and the people's attitudes will takes it's toll on you. Like I told "PSouth", dont move to a large city in FL if you think the Charlotte area is bad. It's worse down here unless you stick to smaller towns.

I see your point...I drove in nyc so if I can drive in Manhattan I can drive anywhere..lol....but yes I do see, and dh see's it every day driving to work...
I think the drivers here are even worse than parts of NY and NJ, although my verdict is still out on that one...

That is also why, I LOVE where we live, I have everything I need at the 4 corners I call it....and all of Glades rd...lol

If I dont need to use the Highway I dont

Why are Floridians relocating out of state?

If you mean natives and long-time residents, and not the fly by night, in one day and out the next, I think it is for a number of reasons...

1. people - the sheer number of people as well as many people who are angry and not pleasant to be around. This number has grown and grown and grown and I swear it seems like the number of ticked off and angry/rude types surpasses the normal and friendly.

2. crime - it's too high.

3. traffic/congestion - no explanation needed.

4. heat and humidity - I'm a native and it's still too damn hot!

5. lack of seasons - warm and hot, and an occasional cool day.

6. drivers - too many mixes of drivers here leads to too many freakin headaches. NY, NJ, foreign, retirees, college kids, etc...

7. jobs/pay - or lack of I should say.

8. lack of assimilation - foreigners who dont want to assimilate - this is frustrating in some parts of FL. If you live in the panhandle, it's probably not an issue but in Central and S FL, it is one.

9. high cost of living - although housing cheaper now than it has been since, what, 2001 or 2002?

There's some examples...

Assimilation
In the Star Trek fictional universe, assimilation is the process by which the Borg integrate beings and cultures into their collective. "You will be assimilated" is one of the few on-screen phrases employed by the Borg when communicating with other species. The Borg are portrayed as having encountered and assimilated thousands of species and billions to trillions of individual life-forms throughout the galaxy.

Some people need to move out of South Florida before they lose their minds. Now we're getting into fictional characters. Wonderful.

But of course they won't move. Why? Because they love to whine endlessly. A rational person would either be happy with what they have, or do something about it. I strongly suggest they do something about and move out of here as soon as possible. It's not healthy to live this way. It's not good for your spirit, for the people around you, your karma.
