Me and my wife were considering going to Gulf Shores, Pensacola, or maybe Destin for our 5th anniversary at the end of July. Any suggestions one what the best beaches are? We would like to avoid huge crowds if possible, I realise that will be hard though. Also, I have no idea which beaches are the safest and what parts of town are the safest to stay in in any of those areas, so any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

Well I love the beaches in Destin and south Walton. However, there are very few places you can get with a smaller crowd down here.

Probably the most open and deserted beaches were over in Navarre. That stretch between Navarre and P'cola are beautiful, but you're in for a walk.

And, another side effect, the empty beaches, are the ones with the most shark attacks. I was swimming over in Navarre, and had a bull swim up to me, then swim away.

I've never had that happen in Destin.

Default Beach Anniversary

Most of the areas in the panhandle are safe. Navarre is very quiet and isolated compared to Pensacola Beach and Orange Beach. Perdido Key might be an idea to check out. My favorite is Navarre just because of the isolation and few people. The shell collecting is better too! Have a great anniversary!

I went to Perdido Key last summer and it wasnt crowded and very nice beaches . Destin beaches are great but the tourist congestion can turn you off. If you want a quieter scenic getaway, I might recommend Dauphin Island, Al. --- its kind of a small romantic place with great beaches on the far east and far west end , some interesting homes sitting high on stilts, jetski rental , tour boat, excellent for bicycle riding , a few small seafood restaurants , country cafe, outdoor bird sanctuary, sealab exhibit , walking paths thru nature. Theres only one Motel on the Island and its called Gulf Breeze Motel . About 3 days will be enough to spend there as its a small Island of 7 miles long by 2 miles wide. You could then take the Ferry ($25) across to the mainland and drive about 1 hour to Gulf Shores, Al. then hit Perdido Key too. Gulf Shores is kind of nice with beach live entertainment at night.

Think about St. George Island.
