Maryville was one of the places we investigated while planning our move. We didn't get to visit there but it ranks high on most lists of great places to retire. I would guess that even if you are not retired, it seems like a nice place to live.

Default Reply to Ken, others.

This is a 'general' reply to this thread in regard to the lifestyle in Fl, and have read many posts here.

Not a native, but I have lived her for 4 decades. I will 'clue you in' to much hostility you might be met with should you consider moving here.

I am conservative. "Old" floridians don't 'neighbor' for a cup of sugar, etc. That is a culture that has bombarde Fl (unwelcome here now). We are not enmeshed people. We are here to live our lives (and GAWD help the naive ones who move here, when your phone rings, door bell rings all hours of the night with the northerners, etc. inviting themselves to your home. I have never witnessed, or could have imagined the mooches that think they 'deserve' a free disneyland, beach, food, etc. FREE You might literally be moved to go unlisted and not answer your door.

Obviously, the best part of living in Fl is our winters. You can kiss that goodbye. The roads are so clogged from the out of staters that mooch here (most on disability or double or triple dippers). Their RV's, their tents.

And it gets much worse. The wages are continally driven down from too much 'glut' on the market, even retirees wanting to work a few hours a week (that they can earn without disrupting their SS or disability). This IS a svc state and now every business and corp capitalizes on that. But who can blame them under the circumstances.

When you shop, go out for dinner or a nice evening out, you will come home disgusted by the trash that has permeated FL.

We are having our typical wild fires. I witnessed an idiot throwing a cigarette out of their escalade throwing a cigarette onto a major road at a light last week. IDIOTS. Now we have all these ignorant 'wannabes' that move here and want to run local politics. Even bitching that they should own their 2nd home here on a free ride while people are struggling to survive the depression that is happening here. The wanna be double dippers.

Politics are a mess here due to that. It's a zoo. Even in deed resticted communities (that you would think would keep the ignorant riff raff out), its' trash everywhere you look. They just can't keep their northern ways NORTH. Trash crammed into their garages (never a car), yet 3-4 autos parked in their drive.

As far as a decade ago, everyone (Floridians) wanted out of here, as I have. I live in a deed restricted community ~ paid top dollar when I bought in a healthy market. My property borders a 'lake'. EVERY time there is a resident (or a few week mooch of a resident here visiting BOING ~ especially major holidays, my backyard is crowded with the wannabes lurking. Never mind the 95% of the lake that NO home borders, always in my back yard.

And I won't 'start' about the hmmmm 'lower class' that has been able to move here due to he lower bank loans. Though they are soon in foreclosure.

Florida is TRULY paradise lost. And it will never change. What the hell is this 'fantasy' that the wannabes think Fl is?

There are some very beautiful places out there but it just wasn't "me", and the lack of humidity freaked me out for some reason. I guess I am used to the big east coast cities and the way everyone is jammed together into small spaces, and the way people relate to each other here.

Well, then I guess you haven't mooched in Fl. Yet I believe you read my post.

Disneyland, disneyworld. I go to neither because I abhor their 'politics', pay no taxes, have own police force, etc. Tickets extremely overprices to stand in lines, etc.

Double dippers are people who receive multiple gov't stipends. Aka policemen who have served in the military, might get a disability AND retirement.

Disabled who are on the golf course all day, etc.

But I wont' go on. I have obviously hit a soft spot with you. Facts are facts and I state facts.

I wonder. Would these millions of people who come here and 'mooch', and I think I spelled that meaning out, FREE, say they never mooched? If it hurts, look inside! Come on. You're kidding me. I heard the word mooch when I was a teenager about the same kind of people. Then I LEARNED mooch.

AND, what is your point?

Boy you said a mouthfull, some true some a little over the edge, I'm not here as long as you, but with twenty years under my belt, I too sometimes resent the "newbies" with there attitudes from whereever they came from, they want this, they want that, just like they had back home, well, if they all get exactly what they wanted, in the way of services like back home, they couldn't afford to live here.

Gone are the days, when you could leave your doors open, cars unlocked in the driveway. Now you have alarm systems, spotlights to keep the undesirables away from your property. Because we have such nice weather
the kids are out 24/7 and when they get bored, they look for trouble.
Replaced my mailbox so far 6 times and had rocks thrown through my front
window 2 times and have had house paintballed 1 time. I don't want to label
a specific group, but most are from up North and the kids think they are so BAD, I will not let anyone intimidate me and in my own way I try to keep law and order in my neighborhood.

Everyone comes here with this fantasy..........Fl is so great, lo and behold, once they get here, they find out taxes are an outrage, schools are crap
and jobs can't be found. Many are stuck here for lack of funds to go back
and those that are fortunate to get out do.

I am leaving soon myself and will gladly drive up 75 with money in hand
and no tears shed, for I will be leaving hell on earth and will never look back

Songbird,

And with the Grace of God, I will be 2 miles behind you going N on (-75).

LOL, I'll never forget a girl telling me (a very professional singer), telling me one night, as she turned to me. "I am getting out. Get out while the getting is good". And she was not joking, she was adamant!

It's my dream. It was a dream to come here 4 decades ago, but I want OUT.

See you on '75. Be well, be happy!

Your mailbox was replaced seven times? Where are the police/HOA security???

Perhaps there are not enough police, teachers, etc., because there is no infrastructure. Florida is crumbling because of corrupt politicians- where is the accountability?

If you know any cops who are collecting retirement pensions and disability payments and are out playing golf, I am sure that if you report them, the government would like to know.
As for "double dippers", I know those who have served 20 years in the military and started another career from which they also retired. They worked for these pensions and deserve them.
I agree with the other poster, please define what you mean by a "mooch". Who are these millions who come here and mooch?
Is a retiree who moves to live in a warmer climate a mooch?
Is someone who moves here to try to give their family a better life a mooch?
Or are you referring to the illegal aliens who are all over this country?
I'm not sure you would know a fact if it came up and introduced itself to you.

AND...your point? They freakin deserve it. Many if not thousands have been injured to points where they will need medical service the rest of their life but still need employment to pay the bills. These are not 9-5 jobs where one has the option to do as they wish. Their life is constantly at risk, they miss holidays, birthdays & milestones b/c these are jobs that go 24/7 365. And many have served 20 years in the military & then had to get a job b/c there is no way to retire at 38 yrs old or so on military pay...Ignorance. Plain ignorance. The "it's every one else's fault" that permanates Florida....floors me... You have your freedom to move around as you wish & complain about all the excess you have due to the military & those who protect you. Since you feel that there is such a problem, report it for it is more than not allowed. There are corrupt people everywhere, but there are a ton out there protecting your butt so you can keep on whining about the abudance of everything we have here in the United States. I've never read so many "wonderful Natives" be so ready to cast the first stone...
