How children lost the right to roam in four generations

One question that is hard to pin down is this: When it comes to child safety from predators, are things worse, or are we simply more aware, therefore they SEEM worse than in previous generations? (the truth probably lies somewhere between the two).

Priorities are a strange thing: there are many adults who would wail and scream at the abduction of their children, but can't be bothered to get off their damn cell phones long enough to chaperon their small children through the parking lot at the mall or grocery store safely. Regularly, I see parents letting young children walk behind or between parked cars without being close enough to snatch them out of harms way- they are too short and far too close to be seen in the rear view mirror, folks.

I've often noticed what I think of as a drama-death-wish that certain parents have ... kind of a subconscious Michael-Jackson-Dangling-Infant-Over-Balcony-Railing thing. The parking lot example is just the easiest to bring to mind, but there are plenty of others... most of them centered on not being attentive. Twitter causes Twagedy, Facebook before Family (apologies for the dark humor).

HHH

Very interesting article. I still don't know what the answer is. It is very important to me to allow my children the freedom and life experience of playing outside and to get into a moderate (not life altering) amount of trouble. I feel comfortable allowing them that, where we live now. I just need to understand why there is such a large concentration of sex offenders in Florida. Specifically 5 miles around an elementary school. I punched in the address where we vacation in Sarasota. The number of sex offenders was 86 in a 5 mile radius. Still high, but less. Every move that my husband and I have made in the last 5 years, was part of a plan to move to Sarasota. We have met wonderful people on each trip. We love what the city has to offer. I don't want to give up that dream. But I wonder..

The stats for Florida might be higher than where you live now, but you could do worst. This map was posted once before in another thread, it might make you feel better about Florida.
Map of Registered Sex Offenders in the United States

Unfortunately, these three articles just happen to be in today's paper:

Child pornography charges are filed against North Port man | Section News | HeraldTribune.com

This slightly older story is ongoing:

GO TO FAMILYWATCHDOG.COM.. you can view each individual sex offender, the crime they commited, date, conviction and mug shot. It also gives you their exact last known address as well as previous addresses. It also lists their places of work..We used this site to research the area before you bought a home..

Don't be alarmed, it's everywhere these days not just here. You just hear about it more out here. Things are not the same, don't allow your kids to have the same freedoms as their older siblings. Even a few years back things were not quite the way they are today.. just think of someone always watching.. be aware of everything and be cautious. We have a four year old and I don't really care what other parents let their kids do, or what they will be doing when they are 14.. if it means excluding her from activities and being left out, im going to allow her to do what I AM comfortable doing. at least she will be safe and warm!

True. It is the way we live our life here too.

Do your research. Not long ago many police officers where arrested in Florida for corruption. It was mention that some of the sex offense charges against people where bogus. A few years ago a popular singer was arrested in Florida .R. Kelly Arrested On 21 Counts Of Child Pornography . I researched the criminal records and could not find him being convicted. He did post $750,000 bond???. Most sex offenders have a court appointed attorney. The problem i see is that sex offenders and sex predators are classed in the same group. Its easy to be classed as a sex offender. If you are 18 dating a 17 year old the parent can file a complaint against you. There are a number of cases where the man was charge with a sex offense because at the time he was older than his girlfriend ,but later got married .

Default Out with the new in with the ''old school''

I believe in ''old school'' justice. We do not have this in AMERICA anymore!!!!

We live in a very ''IRRESPONSIBLE SOCIETY' of blame and pass the buck.We live in a society that has become very soft and very sensative. We live in a society that almost is geared to FEELING SORRY for these terrible crimes people commit and feeling sorrow because there ''childhood'' was ''abusive''..LOL,LOL,LOL

Until we start bringing back old school justice, harsher punishment and personal accountability then criminals will continue to prey on others. Its evident that the ''new'' punishments are not tough enough to teach these parasites right from wrong..

In some other countries if you drive drunk just one time you are imprisoned in a very tough prison for LIFE...In some contries you are executed and put to death for D.W.I...

Here in AMERICA over the years have created a very loving, sensitive, kind and compassionate Prison Cell for these parasites.3 hots and a cot, collage, schooling, cable TV,group therapy, counseling etc,etc,etc...

So in my own opinion the punishment is not severe enough for a person to truly think TWICE before he or she commits any crimes in AMERICA...

This is only getting worse in America as the LIBERAL MOVEMENT continues to rise and push the ''pass the buck program'' AND the ''go easy on criminals program''.........NOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT WORKINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG....OLD SCHOOL WORKS AND KEEPS PEOPLE IN THERE PLACE AND RESPONSABLE...

Very simple:
IF YOU ARE UNINVITED IN MY HOME WHILE MY WIFE AND KIDS ARE SLEEPING,YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO CATCH A BULLET IN THE CHEST,AFTER THAT I SHOULD BE PRAISED AND PUT IN THE NEW YORK TIMES AND ON FOX NEWS AS AN AMERICAN HERO.

BRING HARSH PUNISHMENT BACK TO AMERICA,LET AMERICANS HAVE AND CARRY GUNS AND BE ABLE TO USE THEM,AND CRIME WILL SLOWLY DECLINE IN AMERICA..ALLOW US GOOD HARD WORKING TAX PAYING CITIZENS FREEDOM TO BE SAFE ON OUR STREETS AGAIN,LIKE WE USED TO HAVE HERE IN AMERICA..

ARM THE GOOD CITIZENS AND TAX PAYERS OF AMERICA..DISARM THE PARASITES AND LOCK EM UP FOREVER...

Im sorry but it is a great concern, we lived close to North Port and in the last couple years there have been a lot of violent crimes including child porn, death of a young girl and a young Mother taken right from her home ie Amber Lee. I think criminals are attracted to good weather and it may help them commit their crimes. It seems like a child is either abducted and killed or raped very frequently in Florida. We have currently moved and have thought about coming back except I don't want to worry about my children being taken from my home. Many of the case in Sarasota and charlotte counties, the criminal took the children or women from their homes. You might want to consider a gated community, if you move there

I live in NP and would have to respectfully disagree with you. There have been two really high profile crimes in NP in the last 15 years. Things like what you mention happen in every city. Again, it comes down to keeping a careful watch on your kids. If you read the background of the father of Coral Rose Fullwood (the child that was murdered) you might see where this some of this stems from. The Denise Lee case was a random act of violence.

I think because they are such a rarity around here they get a lot of press when something like that happens. In some bigger cities these kind of things are much more common and so you don't hear about them much.

Default Plethora of registered sex offenders

As a retired parole officer, there are multiple types of sex offenders, some of which are low risk and some quite high. I'm not sure that FL has an unusual amount of them. We have PLENTY in CA You should be able to get their names and addresses, and you have the right to go down to the courthouse/records and read the trial info...it's a public document that anyone can read. Good luck with your decision. Laura
