In spite of the aggressive approach that Punta Gorda police have taken against registered offenders in their jurisdiction, here's an example from yesterday's paper of a trusted family member being the attacker.

Before I came down here ten years ago, I had a perception that Florida had a problem with missing children and runaways. This perception was, of course, due to all the national news reports back then. I lived an hour or two from NYC for a long time and I don't remember seeing stories like this as often, but that was ten years ago.

Now that I've lived here, and have been exposed to the local stories all this time, my perception hasn't really changed. Does Florida deserve the bad reputation that it seems to have? I don't really know.

Since Sg298 started this thread on March 3rd, this is what I've found so far in the local news here. Hopefully readers from out of the area can compare the reports to what they have seen reported in their own areas.

I'm really glad that I started this post. It is nice to get the opinions from the people living in SWF. I reviewed the posts from Tommy105, of the activity in the local news, if I counted right, all but 3 were domestic. I would defiantly feel more comfortable living in a place like Punta Gorda, where the sex offenders are being monitored. It has also made me think about all of the Type1 sex offenders living in NYS that are not on the registery. Just for clarification, I didn't start this post to bash Florida. I started it because I love Florida, and want to live there. I thank everyone for contributing.

I don't think anybody was accusing you of bashing Florida. That comment was most likely addressed to me.

I also think it's too bad that the people attacking my posts didn't even bother to try to address your particular situation. It's also kind of funny, because if you look back at some of their older posts, you'll find that they've done some "bashing" of their own in the past.

A few of these people were less than half a mile from the school. I looked up my zip code in WNY and there are 4 in my zip code total( and it's a pretty big area). Our goal has been to move to Sarasota for about 5 years now. We have been preparing and planning for a long time. I don't know if I could plop my children down in the middle of all these sleaze balls and hope for the best. Yet, I'm feeling sort of sad having to let my own dreams die. So here's the question: Why are there so many sex offenders in Florida?
You are rightly concerned about sex offenders in florida and the entire nation. To date, we have 777,704 registered sex offenders across the nation -- this of course doesnt include a far greater number who havent been caught yet. Perhaps youve already put it together , that, america grooms our young children into being future sexual predators , hedonists, of which many turn into Offenders . Id suggest our U.S. Government step in to force the media and Hollywood to stop this...but our Government contains them too .

That was over 20 years ago that happened, which if people read my earlier posts on Sarasota will understand!!! Downtown is a totally different place these days. And I highly resent you digging up my old posts to "prove your point." Earlier in the thread I even agreed with you about the amount of offenders here. What I OBJECT to, is the constant listing of the "gruesome stories" in this thread, and making is sound somehow as if Florida has a monopoly on this, and that they all are "attracted" here for some reason, which is total BS.

Helpful information is posting the websites that show where they (offenders) are, and the statistics etc., I am on board with that. NOT your constant fascination with the gory details! I think you have a real problem, buddy.
