We are thinking of retiring to Florida. My husband would prefer a 55 plus gated community but we can't afford to pay a lot for monthly dues. We have a German Shepherd, so we would need to have a yard with a fence. Do these types of communities exist? We would be looking for a house around $225,000.

Thanks!

I can't give you any community or area specifics. Florida is a big state. Gulf Coast, Atlantic, Panhandle? What are you looking for, what do you like to do? How far do you want to be from things?

As a dog person myself, one word of caution: be very specific in the questions you ask about bringing your dog to live there - and yes, this applies to buyers. There are a lot of areas which are passing Breed Specific legislation, some associations won't allow certain breeds even if the state or county does. GS are on a lot of the ban lists or proposed ban lists. You will want to google breed specific legislation for this state to protect your dog.

There are some communites which have size restrictions for dogs. In my experience house shopping I found most of the golf course communities would not allow fencing or if they did it had to be within the outline of the home (directly behind, not stick out beyond the sides, etc.) In some cases that's not much of an area for the dog to roam.

There are a bunch of 55+ communities in Florida. Do a google search and you should find many of them. Have you checked into The Villages in Central Florida the largest 55+ community in the country.
