Auto Insurance Question
I am trying to get quotes for auto insurance in Florida. Allstate told me that I would have to register our vehicles in Florida before they could start the policy.
However I thought I read somewhere on the Florida DMV website that if you are relocating to Florida, you must have your vehicles insured already before you register your vehicles. UGH!
So which is true?

Well you do need to provide insurance coverage when you register your vehicle in FL. it's mandatory. It could be just Allstates policy not to insure you until you are an official resident. I know i tried getting an auto quote in another state myself and i was told the same thing. they wouldn't quote me until i became a resident there. You could always register the car with your current insurance policy and then switch over to Allstate.

I would use my current policy, but it says on the Florida DMV website that The auto insurance must be purchased from an insurance company licensed by the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation.
My current policy is for Illinois.
I will call the DMV office tomorrow to see what to do.

you might want to check with another insurance company and see what they say. Right now, Allstate in FL is not the greatest insurance here. They are currently dropping thousands of home owners insurance for no reason including myself. i have Liberty Mutual and they are not based in FL or at least I didn't sign up with them here in FL. I just called their 800 number and got a policy and i have 3 vehicles i register every year with that insurance

State Farm
We have our auto insurance with State Farm; I've contacted an agent in Florida because we are moving there soon (waiting for DH transfer) - my policy in Ohio just transfer to Florida; more costly in Florida (almost double), but it just rolls over from here (Ohio) to Florida when we get there.

I had no idea that Allstate was doing that!! I only chose them because I was at the Progressive website getting a quote and they also listed AllState and Statefarm, and Allstate happened to be cheaper.
But I will check out some other companies!

Yes ALLSTATE sent us our cancellation letter for our home insurance and a week later sent us a quote for auto insurance. YEAH right. It all goes back to the hurricane risk that's why they are letting so many people go. they were the cheapest for home owners too but now we had to get another company and it doubled 100% and then some. I had Progressive, then moved on to Libery Mutual. Progressive kept going up every year for no reason, we went on to The Hartford and same thing, the premiums kept going up and finally now we have Liberty Mutual which saved us almost $300 a year. We have clean records and never had an accidents. Don't understand why the premiums would go up but then they explained it to me... they go by the number of accidents in your surrounding area so we all end up paying for it.

That's what we thought too and the cars only got older. I don't understand it either how they can classify our premiums according to our surrounding statistics and how everybody else drives. Pissed me off. What's the sense in keeping a clean record hoping for lower rates when it doesn't matter to them. Geico was the most expensive for us.
