Default Ft Walton Bch or Destin?

Dh has a work trip for Eglin AFB in June. Ds and I are going to tag along. Just wondering where we should go. Ft Walton Beach or Destin? It will be my 16 yr old and me during the day with no car. We need to be in walking distance to the beach and hopefully some shopping and fast food. Also does any one recommend a place with these things in mind? Thanks so much!

Walkable is hard in the area and renting bicycles can be as much as renting a second car would be. The best spot would probably be the Crystal Beach (ie. far eastern) part of Destin which would put you within walking distance of both the beach and Destin Commons Mall if you can find something close to Hutchinson St. or Crystal Beach Drive. There's a Holiday Inn Express on Hutchinson and any number of rental condos and cottages in that area as well.

I'd also look into the Sandestin resort. It's further out for your spouse to get to and from Eglin, but you can use resort shuttles to get to beach, shopping areas, etc.

Harborwalk area in destin is designed as a one stop vacation place with plenty of shops, places to eat, and lots of beach activities like jetskis, boat trips, para sailing, and all things touristy.

Agree, this is a nice area. If Eglin is footing the bill for your motel., definetly stay at the Emerald Grand Hotel right on the HarborWalk. The Hotel has a sea shuttle to take you to a nearby island where residents occupy their own stretch of beach . Live entertainment outside will be starting soon on the HarborWalk on Sat. nights. Take a cab to Destin Commons shopping center cause its kind of unique in the square outside. If the kids are cranky that day, just take em to the Bungy-Jump where they leap over a concrete parking lot -- its close to the Emerald Grand. ..lol...

I tend to forget about Harborwalk. Or maybe it's just pretending it isn't there... (Controversial development because it's out of scale with surrounding areas)

I will check out that Harborwalk. Its not the military footing the bill, its a contractor. I'm not sure if there is a cap on it or not. I will have to ask dh. Thanks so much all!!

I just checked out that Emerald Grand and the least expensive room is $295 a night. I bet they won't pay that. LOL It looks awesome though!

Tell the Contracting Firm the Emerald even throws in a chocolate and turns the bed down at no extra charge ; Im sure they want you and the kids to think that Hubby is working for a real stand-up company !

You might want to consider Bay Towne Warf. Its a little area with shopping, restaurants, and the beaches. You can stay on the bay side, for not loads of money, and then hop on a bike, or catch a ride over to the beach side, and hit the beaches there.
