You def. want to stay away from the coastline...
Ex. when living in S. FL, we always got/get hit HARD. (Phones and internet down for a month) but when the biggies hit places like Brooksville, Land o' Lakes, Spring Hill, Clermont, they were w/o power for about a day and had minimal damage. And that is fact and honest information. However, it's a trade-off. Less hurricanes , less traffic but not the bling of the city lights and pace. Then again, the latter is what many are trying to escape from.
Go central FL my friend. Go central, FL. But stay away from huge cities.

Do you have any list of priorities, wants and needs, besides you don't want to be where a storm may come?

you might have to realize that FLA may not be the place for you, almost the entire state is at risk for being hit by a hurricane, it's the price that is paid for the great weather 99% of the time.
I live near Jacksonville and that area is one of the least risky area in FLA, but that isn't zero risk

Don't know much about Poinciana but I sought refuge in Tampa during Hurricane Francis only to get hit in Tampa and have to travel back to WPB. Go northeast Florida.

Nearly any part of Florida can get a major hit from hurricanes, crime is like every place else, there are hotbeds of drugs, robberies, battery no matter where you go.
You don't give enough info........will you have a job when relocating or will you have to find a job? Do you need schools for kids? Price range for housing?
Our hurricane season runs from June 1st to Nov. 1st. You like the heat, mostly sunny humid days.........water temp is around 84 right now, like bath water.
I see your from NY, come join the crowd down here, but pleeeaase don't come down here with that NY attitude, won't get you anywhere fast. As a former Bronxite, trust me, its true, leave the attitude behind.
Good luck in your search

I wouldn't even worry about it. Storms are for the most part just an inconvenience. You lose electric for a while and may have a few trees come down but the probably of you actually having real damage to your house if it is prepared is lower then the odds of you hitting the lottery tonight. I would worry more about the cholesterol content of last nights dinner.

We are looking heavy in the central gulf side and not worried at all about hurricanes, I looked over that chart and read some info on hurricanes and 90% of the time you will be warned way in advance it is coming and can drive out of the area.
Our plans are to have kits with totes marked and ready to go for the items we treasure and need as well as gas, water and food we are also going to have a pull behind trailer for my truck and will be and can be out of town within 15 minutes of the warning if need be.
Also, the location we choose to move to in Florida will have many various routes out of the area if needed.
The hurricanes will not deter me from moving to Florida, but I am aware of them and will be prepared.

Good luck getting out of the Tampa area in 15 mins, maybe 15 hours!

Well, I don't know about "just an inconvenience." I saw pictures of whole communities flattened especially in Punta Gorda in 2005, people waiting for drinking water and food and looking for a place to shower and sleep. Repairs in other condo communites took a long time and many seniors were displaced. I would never want to live in Florida. Take a vacation for a few weeks in the winter but that's about it.
