Default If you want a job - you have to commute!

Hi!

I've been reading Dorothy's post about looking for a job. I moved to Spring Hill in July 05. I was told that Florida pays lower...yes, indeed it does!
Jobs are limited in Spring Hill...and anything that pays decent is going to be found in Tampa or somewhere else in the Tampa bay area. I bought a house here because I got alot of house for my money. I commute to Clearwater. Yes, it is a hike...but that is a choice I made in order to pay my bills. The Suncoast makes it not so bad...but it is either I do this or move back north.
Moving back is not an option...unless I had an offer I could not refuse.

Otherwise, your other option is to have your own business. On any given day you will see people driving around with trailers attached advertising their lawn care or contracting business. You can do well as a nurse or physician here. Teachers salaries are low here..but that is the price to live in sunshine most of the year.

If you don't want to commute...it is going to be hard to find a job here.

New Port Richey is not far...try going there.

Mr. Steeler, do you know of a reliable lawn service in Spring Hill? We are selling our house and need lawn care while we are absent. Please post or private message me if you can recommend a service.

If you know of anyone looking for a new 3/2/3 c gar. home w/two spare front rooms on 1/3 acre w/$17,000 in upgrades, tell me about them and we will give you a finder's fee upon closing. Thanks.

Default Hello Dorothy

I'm in the same zip 34608, lived here over twenty years, raised my kids here,
have businesses here and can tell you from experience, its hard to make friends, the area is a transient area, people come and go daily, homes have been sold 3/4/5 times...I can't keep up with them all, my whole neighborhood is completely new people, I'm the only original one on this block. Sorry to hear that your having a problem with employment, seems everyone else is in the same boat, every member of my family are all self-employed because the rate of pay here is horrible, I see many families working 2 jobs to make ends meet.

Might I suggest that you join a church, I know several churches in the area have coffee hours after services and its a good way to meet people. I have friends that go to St. Joan of Arc and have a calendar full of social and church related dates. Several of the other denominations also have clubs to join and such. Volunteer at the hospital, your close enough to SH Regional
I tried volunteering at Suncoast Elementary when my kids were there years ago, very clickish group, I never went back. Oh, there is a New York Club
plenty of LI people there, I was fortunate to have neighbors from Deer Park when I built my house, they were the greatest, but after 5 yrs they left for Brandon, then I got a couple from Hicksville, they stayed 5 yrs too and then moved. Now I have people from TN and they don't talk to anyone, stay by themselves.......strange. I meet people every day, young families that come here to raise their families, want a house, job, the American dream, only to have it dashed, so many people here are looseing their homes or walking away. Sad. But its like that all over the United States, not just FL.

I wish you the best and hopefully you will find a job soon. Wish I could offer some solutions to your problem. Good Luck!

Exclamation re: Hi Dorothy From Spring Hill, 34608

Same story happened to me. I've worked all my life in NYC and also worked in Long Island. Never had a problem with employment. However, it's been almost a year since I've found work here in Spring Hill, 34606 area.

I left a high paying job $ for this... Unless you're willing to take minimum pay of $6.67 an hour, the highest pay for this zip may be $9 an hour and you can't support a family nor yourself with that.

I miss living on Long Island so much. I haven't been here that long, so I am trying to give it some time.
I have been trying to find employment here with no success.
It seems companies don't even accept your resume in person. You must submit one over the computer.. Which means my resume is one of thousands.. and probably never looked at.
I am not interested in working all the way in Tampa.. If that was an option, I would have stayed on Long Island and worked in NYC, same kind of commute.
I moved here for an easier life..and although I have a beautiful home for the money, it hasn't been much easier.
With no job, no friends, no family, it can be anything but easier or happier.
If I don't find employment soon.. I will be forced to sell my home in Spring Hill and move back to New York, where the work is.
This is a nice place to live if you are retired. But if you need to work and support your family, forget it.
Is anyone going through the same situation I am?
I see people relocating and employed.. People have told me it is not what you know but whom you know.
Well, thanks for letting me vent! I just wondered if I am alone with this problem.
Thanks,
Dorothy in Spring Hill

Default Jobs

And from what I see, its not getting any better, I was talking with a lady this AM, from the North LI,NY she went to Career Central to see what was available, talked with a counselor and was told she's over qualified for anything in SH, she was a paralegal in NY, been over a year and still searching for a job. My hubby went to the courhouse to get interveiwed as a "volunteer" mediator for the county......was told he had a NY attitude and was totally over qualified, which they did not like, (they wanted a good ole boy attitude) plus that he had 6 degrees in various fields, and when they seen NY on the application that totally turned them off, and this was for a "volunteer" job, NO PAY.

With several small businesses closing in the last week, the mom and pop stores are having a hard time hanging on........just this AM in a local restaurant you would think that with over 300 RV'ers in town for their convention that the restaurants would be packed, not so....lunchtime a maybe 30 people came in..........the economy is bad, housing is bad, its a domino effect and it trickles down to everyone.

I am looking at renting a house for a short vacation in Spring Hill. I usually rent in Sugarmill Woods, and was thinking of something different.

The house is off Cortez Blvd., turn south onto Deltona Blvd, then east onto Freeport drive.

Is this a good area?. I like private back yards, well groomed lawns, and quiet streets. I also much prefer an area without children, as we are looking for peace and quiet.

If this is not good, then where in Spring Hill can I find what I am looking for, or should I keep staying in Sugarmill Woods.

Thanks in advance.

Freeport is not a major thoroughfare but it is a through street for that neighborhood.
There are also children in the area.

The exact same story for me. I left michigan at a good job and good money for a better life here. It didnt happen. There are no good jobs here. And it does seem true. Its who you know. Thats how small towns operate i guess. Because of personal circumstances i have to stay one more year and then i am leaving. You cant live on minimum wage anywhere anymore. Everything costs the same as the rest of the country but your pay hasnt changed. My niece came here 2 years ago starting out as a new teacher and she is leaving in three weeks. They now want them to take a pay cut and she cant afford to live now. Everyone i know who has moved here hates it.
