Oh..yeah!! I had forgotten that! We decided to go swimming late one afternoon. Once it started getting dark, it was like a cloud of locusts descended on us. We literally ran back to the condo. I saw people camping out on the air force range - I can't imagine how they stood it overnight.

A lot of things seem picturesque but you need to look at the big picture. I live in Fort Lauderdale and to be honest, we hardly even have any mosquitoes. I am looking at a property near the Apalachicola river and forest. It is beautiful, five acres on a paved road. Nice configuration, high and dry but I don't know about the bugs. We get spoiled living in the city and living rural sounds very appealing and has a mystique about it but. There are some realities that no matter how nice it looks might scare away the city types like me. We looked at one property and when we got home my wife had an itch. She had "Tick" on her. This may be an everyday thing to people who live there but to us it was a real turn off. I am very conflicted now as to what I really may be able to tolerate, I may be fooling myself about what I really want.

Maybe because Venus is right down the road from Lake Placid -- just a few miles below the intersection with SR 70 and US 27.

Sebring is where we stay when we visit family in Fla. It's a nice town, but like was said before, there is basically no employment there except for a lot of part time jobs here and there. We thought Lake Jackson was very nice and most of the town is very neat. There is an area that's basically a slum, but you'd never have to go there. Besides the employment situation, the deterrent for us that even though it's not a big town, it's spread out all over. You have to drive so far for everything cause it just doesn't seem set up right. IMHO
They do have a Publix, Winn Dixie, Albertsons, etc. I couldn't tell you about the other markets you wondered about.
Other then the one area, there didn't seem to be a lot of poverty there, but they have been having a bit of a problem with crime. They had a spree of arsons a while ago. And I mean things like a church was burned down, etc.
The population of the town states only about 10,000, but there are probably at least twice that many because some people are not considered to be living "in town", but in actuality, they are right in town. I understand that Sebring is now pretty much connected with Avon Park.
We did get to visit Lake Placid. It's small~about 2,000 people or so. We found it to be a very friendly, cute little town and we loved the murals. But again, the employment situation could be a problem for a lot of us. Their housing has also skyrocketed, but it seems to be settling down quite a bit now. Let us know what you think of it when you return.

Employment is wherever we have a telephone and high speed cable internet connection so that's not a problem. It was a big problem in most of western north carolina ( as was the racism ) That's what I meant by "progressive" or not. I am a white male and my Wife is from Vietnam. I have zero tolerance for the B/S. So we wrote most of western NC off after spending more than 20K going back and forth.
I did notice that the poverty level is higher there at least based on what I read at census.gov
Arsons? Jeesh.
Lakefront is expensive as it is everywhere. A board member mentioned his place in the 200's and it appears there's quite a few of those types of houses available on canals that lead out to a larger body of water, or are on a "pond" that's a few acres in size.
I heard there are "rolling hills" there. I'd like to see that.

Mr. Tudo....remember these are Florida 'hills' LOL
But seriously, when you get in the hilly section around the Lake Wales area it is quite pretty. I really like that area but it is a little north of Sebring/Lake Placid.
