Authentic Italian > NY Style > Detroit Style > California > Chicago, but all are good if done well.

My list is basically the reverse of this, with the exception of "authentic italian".

I heard a comedian on the radio yesterday (01-11-16) insulting calzones. "Calzones: you eat them, you end up looking like them."

Funny thing is, my family is from Chicago. I do really sincerely appreciate and enjoy Chicago style deep dish ... but to me it really isn't pizza, it is sort of it's own category of food, and if I crave pizza, Chicago style never comes to mind.

I had to Google "Detroit style pizza" since the rest of the country has absolutely no reason to ever go to Detroit. It looks like rectangular deep dish.

I'm fine with a well made pizza of any of the styles. Because of the part of the country I'm from, I'm far more familiar with badly made New York style pizza.

Never liked Chicago deep dish style pizza and I grew up in Chicago. I prefer the thin NY style that I can fold. Too much cheese in the thick stuff.

It is sort of "deep dish". It is kind of similar to a pizza hut deep dish or something (though obviously done well) ... where as actual Chicago deep dish isn't just a deep dish, the crust of Chicago DD is different from a normal pizza dough, it is more crisp and buttery, almost like an actual pie crust.

I'm not sure I ever had a pizza I didn't really dislike - unless maybe it was burnt too much?

Lived in Naples (Italy) for 3 years. That was some good eats and a lot of good times.
I've enjoyed a med to semi thick.

Thin, in the brick oven with fresh ingredients - always a plus.

Not entirely fussy but not keen with sardines on top. At least you won't have to worry about me running off with your slice/s.

Still trying to imagine the calzone on legs running away ("eat them, look like them" comment)

I am a born and bred New Yorker and it is no contest. NY pizza is my strong preference along with New Haven.

That said, while I, like many, do not consider Chicago deep-dish to be a true pizza, there is no reason to insult it. It is an absolutely delicious creation and when I am in Chicago I seek it because it, like NY pizza, only seems to be done right in the vicinity of its hometown.

That said, it is just not the dish that comes to mind when I crave pizza anymore than a taco is what comes to mind when I crave enchiladas.

While the two share ingredients and a name, the technique and preparation differ enough to consider them two different dishes in my opinion. And I would rather have a well prepared Chicago deep-dish than a crappy NY slice.
