If you really are concerned about what is in the Fast Food you are eating be sure to read "Fast Food Nation". It came out over 10 years ago but I would be willing to bet not much has changed.
That article is absolute crap. There is no way in he*ll that ANY slaughterhouse is allowed to sweep up scraps off the floor and sell them as hamburger. Absolutely not! And let's not kid ourselves. Packing plants are CRAWLING with USDA Inspectors!
The scraps from slaughterhouse floors go to the RENDERING PLANT and are processed into pet food.
So back to the question about $1 hamburgers at fast food dives...
First, it does not cost McDs $1 to produce McDoubles. So while they may not make much on them, they're not losing money.
Second, those "Value Menu" items are just there to lure customers in. Very few people ever buy them, and if they do they buy other things in addition. Bottom line: They make plenty of money on them.
There's been so much hyperbole about this stuff on the mainstream media and, naturally, on the internet, that cesspit of lies and hyperbolic vomit . It's made me into a fan of the stuff. I now, purposely, order the cheap burgers at chains that haven't stated they've given up on the stuff.

I had McD's today for the first time in a month. It was delicious. Should have got the large fries.
I bet the bun costs more than the meat. That's the case with hot dogs at home. You can buy a dozen wieners cheaper than a dozen hot dog buns.
