You hear the weather reports that it is going to come a big snowstorm. What do you stock up on (or make sure you have in your pantry) and make to eat and have on hand?
Potatoes and any kind of canned protein( no not dog food) I can find. Also lots of Snickers bars. Oh and pistachios, Ok ********** just leave and go to Disney World for a week or two.
MRE's. I could live on them for a month. In fact, I have more than a month of them, for two. I had the vegetarian pasta meal the other day which was better than the last few pasta and red sauce meals I had out at restaurants.
Bread
Milk...you can freeze it..just leave it outside.
Bottles of water
Peanut Butter
Canned foods: soup, stew, spam, for some, potatoes, veggies, tuna, chicken, beans, spaghettios, and ravioli, etc.
Crackers
Cheese in a can
Oatmeal packets
Cereal
Chocolate
Camp stove if you have electric appliances, batteries, flashlights, and candles. Don't forget cards, dice, and board games
When I hear that we are having a storm, I go into french toast syndrome: must have bread, eggs, butter, and milk. Also make sure that we have the making for homemade chicken noodle soup, chili, or something like that. And definitely pet food. I also must have hot chocolate and donuts, so I'm usually making a run to Dunkin.
I usually have enough stuff in the freezer and on the shelf to live on if I get really snowed in, but that hasn't happened since 1993.
When it snows, I like to have Beef Stew with Italian Bread. Chicken Noodle soup. Brownies. Hot Chocolate. Everything's cooking at once and the condensation is running down the windows and it just feels like a happy place.
I suggest everyone keep powdered milk on the shelf. Use the real stuff for drinking and reconstitute the powdered milk for cooking. It's terrible to run out of milk to drink when you have a whole pan of fresh-made brownies.
Eggs, canned soup, oatmeal, coffee, milk, bread, cheese, dog food.
Because I live in a metropolitan area, even if I'm snowed in, I can generally get to the grocery store on foot if I need to. Whether or not the grocery store is open, though, is dependent upon the severity of storm and if workers can get THERE.
Nothing. The house is usually well stocked enough, and I've never been stuck in my house for more than a day anyway.
It amuses me to no end to see the crowds at the store when snow is forecast; do they think they'll really use those 12 gallons of milk in the day or two they're likely to be stuck indoors?

And make sure you have a manual can opener, not electric, and a boiler coffee pot if you so imbibe....

Okay, I give up. What's "MRE's"?
