If this is only 2400 calories, I'd eat my hat. They probably had 1000 calories of wine.

Umm---this is called a Banquet, folks. A phenomenon so comonplace in human culture, that we even have a special word for it.

1. a lavish meal; feast.
2. a ceremonious public dinner, esp. one honoring a person, benefiting a charity, etc.

Who is being castigated for this: Michelle Obama, or her Chinese hosts, or who? "Here, Madame First Lady, here's a small boiled fish and a peeled carrot. Careful of the bones. Bon appetit".

Visiting dignitaries are not responsible for the form of the hospitality of their hosts, and it is a grave insult to not accept it graciously.

I'm reminded of a politcal candidate in a winter bye-election to fill a vacant seat in a constitutency in Labrador, who told me he was looking forward to his dogsled and snowmobile campaign trip, where he would have a chance to dine regularly on caribou and seal and ptarmigan and salmon. When he returned and I asked him about his trip, he said everywhere he went, he was regarded as a guest of honor from the urban civilized world, and they got out their last can of Spam for him.
