Who are they and what direction are they going in? If you've been watching you've probably seen how much their original mission has changed...if they ever had one.

I kind of skimmed through the book that talked about their inception. I used to watch a lot more but I pretty much lost interest a few years ago when it seemed to switch from a how-to to a travelogue format.
I stopped watching years and years ago. It used to be really good and I did learn a lot from them years ago. Now, I couldn't even tell you who is still there and who is new etc.
I rarely watch because I have no interest in seeing the same people with too many of their own shows. All those competitions hold no interest to me. I just want to see how to prepare different types of food and would even like to see shows where they introduce and teach about foreign specialties. It really seems like it has turned into the Bobby Flay/Guy Fieri network.
As a chef of over 20 years, having lived through the birth of the food network, I, as well as a great number of folks in my industry, went from liking it to loathing it pretty quickly. I will say, it made being a chef "cool". 20 years ago, when asked what you did, if you replied chef, very few really cared. The FN really seemed to popularize the profession, create a whole slew of other contest shows both on and off the FN and made it seem like such a glamorous profession. . . and glamorous it aint. Not to mention some of the "talent", ugh, what a joke. There are a handful of people that I still secretly enjoy, but there are far more folks on there that I can't stand.
I am relatively new to Food Network so didn't have any attachments to the "old" stars. I like The Kitchen and some of the "business" shows like Food Fortunes and Save My Bakery. I take notes during DDD for use during summer travels. Guy Fieri is a local from here (Ferndale) and is incredibly generous with his tie and resources to help our local youth so I won't be joining the "trash Guy" chorus. He is an amazing promoter.
Food Network elevated what Americans expect in a meal - at home and in a restaurant.
