Home Depot usually has it if no one else does. I try and stick with hardwood charcoal, I read somewhere that briquettes are made out of compressed coal dust. No thanks.
I use hardwood as well. That's the main reason why I order it online. Very few carry it during the so called "grilling months", it's even harder to find during the off season.
I'm not a fan of propane. I like to have a few huge apple, hickory and mesquite chunks around the outside of the big kettle grill. That way, if wood smoke is in the plan, I jsut scoot a couple of chunks closer to the charcoal so that it smolders during cooking and usually it goes out when I put on the lid after cooking and is there for the next fire. I use only the really big chunks, 4" cubes usually. Except for apple which we get locally and can even get bigger pieces.

You've got the right idea.
