I usually check the menu before seated, or online. But in this case... I would get an appetizers and something to drink. Or desserts and coffee.. depends on the time of the day.
Most generally you can tell the "price" range of a resteraunt by the decor and the pose/dress of the patrons in it.
In many areas, expense is relative so knowing the area is key in helping determine expense.
If I have doubts, I ask to see the menu before being seated. If I am seated, I just say "I'm sorry, your prices are higher than I expected them to be."
We have walked out of plenty of restaurants. Nothing to be embarrassed about, whether its' because its too expensive or nothing on the menu looks good to you. We do try to always look at the menu before we are seated, but there have been times when we didn't, and if it wasn't to our liking, we simply get up and on our way out just tell the host/hostess that we've changed our mines and won't be staying. Nuff said.
I always try to "scope" out the restaurant, but if not check the menu when I walk in. If it looks out of reach price wise, then I just leave. No big deal...
I was sitting in the presentation at a well known steak house watching the server present a never ending list of humongous slabs of meat when my stomach turned and I left. I walked down the street to spaghetti factory, had some $6 pasta and was happy as a clam :-)
If the menu isn't posted outside and I haven't done my due diligence, I always ask to see it, mainly to see what they're serving, but also to check prices.
Remember that credit card your ex gave you and forgot to ask you to return when you broke up? This is the perfect occasion to dig that out of the bottom of your purse.
