I, too, would already know about what the prices are ahead of time. But if I did get surprised I would not dirty anything, apologize to my waiter, and tell him/her I had an emergency.

I think the only time I have ever been caught off guard in this situation was while on vacation in Key West, I moved myself to the bar area had a drink and left..

It's pretty rude to just walk out, and there's no reason lie or stick around taking up space. Just tell the staff you've decided not to eat there. You do owe them that much; you don't owe an explanation.

If you order an appetizer, you're just taking up space that they could have used to serve someone else. Many expensive restaurants only have 1 or 2 seatings a nights. They know not everyone wants to pay that kind of money (Taco Bell, I'm looking at you), so just get out of the way.

If you get up and leave without a word, they may hold the table, thinking you're coming back. Or they may one of the staff was responsible.

If you make up a lie, you're, well, lying. I've left restaurants because I didn't like the menu, gone next door, and ordered. It's not insulting. They know they can't please everyone all the time.

I would say the rest of my party just called and can't make it, so we'll be back another time.

Hubby and I have walked into lots of overpriced places. It isn't that we "can't afford" them, but he simply will not pay an overinflated price for certain things. We've had a few incidents where we've walked into a place, he asks to see the menu before we get seated, and we've walked out. Not in a rude way - he just hands the menu back to the seating person and says thank you.

Then, there are those places we go that we know are expensive, but I want to go, or we're going with other people who want to go, and we just go. You can't always be a cheapskate.

Have not visited a fancy place for quite a while.

Seems that as the price increases the amount of food on the plate decreases.

When I worked there, you could get just about any footlong for less than $5. Except the chicken.

I'd look at the menu and then tell the waiter 'Sorry I can't eat any of this- I'm allergic to the prices.'
