I'm with you... its on my things to do list right next to cooking and eating breakfast on the rim of the Grand Canyon at daybreak... the one I knew was in the Western New York area, Sheridan Drive I believe... used to get a postcard good for a free dog and float for my birthday when I was a boy every year too...

Worst fast food place, hands down, has to be McDonald's. I will only go to one out of sheer desperation, i.e., nothing else available wherever I happen to be at the time.
I like Carl's Jr. (I believe they're known as Hardee's east of the Rockies), Chick Fil-A and Jack in the Box.

I like White Castle just for the ambiance. I dare not eat Sliders, but do love the onion chips and coffee.
The rest of 'em scare me. But if forced, I prefer McDonald's. Nobody does fries like MickeyD's.

In-N-Out is a classic hamburger place. They basically just serve burgers, fries, shakes, and soda. They only have locations in California, Arizona, and Nevada. The menu is very simple, with a few unpublished variations, that works very well. By keeping the menu simple, they stick to the things they do well. All of their products are fresh, not frozen, and in my opinion are the best tasting of all the fast food burger places. They only list three burgers on their menu: the classic "hamburger," the "cheeseburger," and the "Double-Double" (my favorite) which is a cheeseburger with double meat and double cheese. They will make larger sandwiches, like a 3x3 (triple meat/triple cheese) or 4x4 (quadruple meat/quadruple cheese), or even bigger. When I travel out of the area, In-N-Out is one of the first places I visit upon my return.
I would have to say that a close second for burgers is Good Times, at least in the Front Range areas of Colorado and Wyoming (Denver and Cheyenne).
I really like A&W for their root beer floats, and the food is at least on par with, if not better than, most other fast food places.
In the San Fernando Valley area of California, I like the Burrito Factory. They are a regional fast food chain, with about a half dozen locations. Their food is very good, and plentiful for the price.
Another regional favorite is Jimmy Dean's, with two locations in the Santa Clarita Valley, and another in Sunland, CA. They have a good variety of food that is tasty and fresh, and reasonably priced.
For Chili Burgers, the local favorite has to be The Original Tommy's. Their food is definitely not for calorie counters, but is made from fresh ingredients and is pretty tasty, in my opinion.
Finally, my other regional favorite is Cupid's for chili dogs. Like In-N-Out, they keep the menu pretty simple, and offer fresh, quality food at reasonable prices.
For something a little different, but still pretty fast, I like Nick-N-Willy's Pizza. They have a good selection of "signature" pizza combinations, some of which are a little unusual in my opinion, but from those that I've had, are delicious. They also use fresh ingredients and a proven formula to produce a consistently good product at a fair price. Most of their business is Take-n-bake, but if you get the personal pizza, they will cook it for you and you can eat it there, at least in the locations I've been to. I've never been disappointed with anything I've had there.

I've eaten at Taco John's in Wyoming a few times, and the food was pretty good. California is a tough market to crack for mexican food, though, since there's pretty much at least one mexican restaurant on every main street in every city in California. There is a lot of competition here, and I think Taco John's would have to offer something exceptional to break into this market. While their food is good, I wouldn't call it exceptional. I think in the market that they serve, they are well positioned to maintain or improve their market position. I really don't know how Taco Bell made it here!
In the southeast portion of Cheyenne, WY, there's a Taco John's and a Good Times Burgers in the same building. This is one of my favorite places to stop in the area, because the kids and I can all find something we like without having to go to several different places.

I don't eat fast food very often, there are too many good inexpensive mom-and-pop eateries here, but when I do I go nostalgic and it's gotta be Taco Cabana (relatively fresh Tex-Mex), James Coney Island (chili dogs and Frito pie!), or Dairy Queen (foot-long chili cheese dogs, burgers, and the best milkshakes!) I get cravings for a good n' greasy chili cheese dog two or three times a year.

White Castle, White Castle, White Castle......bet you don't know what my favorite fast food is
I also like Sonic, A&W, Taco Tico (I have only seen them around Kansas so maybe they are regional ) McDonalds is ok....I like to get a small bag of fries and an orange soda just for nostalgia's sake. I stopped going after they quit frying their pies though.
Oh I almost forgot one of my mid East favorites.....BLIMPIES Subs......nobody does subs like Blimpies.
When did the world quit serving Pepsi? I HATE Coke
