Oils produced in California surpassed those with an Italian heritage in Consumer Reports' latest taste-tests of 23 extra-virgin varieties, which are supposed to represent the pinnacle of quality. McEvoy Ranch (grown on a 550-acre property in Petaluma) and Trader Joe's California Estate, both from California, earned the highest scores and were the only products deemed "Excellent."
Interesting results, especially compared with the taste test done just a few months ago from Good Housekeeping. Which rated Iliada as "best". I bought some from Amazon, and I agree that it's delicious on salads, etc. Reminds me of the flavor of the Colavita that I used to be able to get in the 1980's, but as a PP poster said, it tastes different now.
From what I've read, most of the foreign stuff is fake/junk.
That's a terrible exaggeration. There is some fakery in the business, yes, although it mostly affects the European housewives who buy cheap oil by the liter.
Deal with a reputable vendor, and taste before you buy... most wine and cheese shops also carry olive oil and have regular tastings. As do gourmet food shops. As do Mediterranean delis. Heck, even better supermarkets do OO tastings these days.
Good olive oil tastes good. The fakes don't. There, that's not hard.
I'll have to taste test. I get TJ's brand and the Fillipio ? one once in a while. When we were kids, we only had olive oil on special occasions. It was too expensive back then. We use it a few times/week now.
There is one thing you CAN'T do with olive oil tho and that is BAKE...I am a baker...love to bake and you just can not do it. That requires butter. For that I use unsalted butter, the real stuff, not margarine. Liz
I recently found Land O Lakes butter with Olive oil and sea salt and its great for baking )
I use olive oil for just about all my cooking needs, it tastes better than veg or corn oil IMO. I buy Bertolli in bulk from Sams Club and usually have a couple of other brands around to use as dipping oils Yummmmm !
