Depending on the crowd, the occasion and the season, I might bring home-made hummus and pita bread, or sausage-cheese appetizers, or BBQ-3000 chicken/bacon poppers, or four-part hominy, or a crock-pot full of carne guisada, or an entire smoked brisket, or a home-made pie, or a huge batch of home-made brownies or lemon bars.
I love having an excuse to make a recipe that feeds a crowd; with just the two of us at home, we don't have much opportunity to make some of the recipes we used to rely upon when our kids were young and still living at home. Take little smokies sausages or hot dogs cut in thirds. Wrap with bacon, secured with a tooth pick. Put in the crock pot. When it is full cover with brown sugar. Cook on low for a few hours.
This is great for football or cold weather gatherings.
You can also use water chestnuts instead of the sausages.
For summers, fruit plates, pasta salads, those cold pies made with fruit, jello, and whipped cream and always some drink containing rum, fruit, and crushed ice.
