There's two levels of competition.

Regular:
HEB
Wal-Mart
Randall's (barely a presence)

Upscale/Gourmet:
Whole Foods
Central Market (HEB owned)
Sprouts
Newflower
Sun Harvest

Here, in Las Vegas, we have Food4Less (my favorite!), Albertson's, Smith's, Sunflower Market, Von's and Wal Marts.

Then we have the Latin American chains: Mariana's, La Bonita, Marketon, El Super, Mercado Del Pueblo.

And a few big Asian grocery stores.

I'm so lucky, I'm 3 blocks to Albertson's, Marketon and La Bonita. 5 blocks to Food4less and 6 blocks to Smith's!

WinCo
Food-4-Less
Stater Bros
Target Greatland
Cardenas
El Super
Costco
Smart & Final
Superior Grocers
Ralphs (the one near me is closing this month)

There's a Super Walmart very close by in an adjoining city, but I seldom go there, as in once or twice a year.

85% of my shopping is done at the first three.

in the NE corner of the Charlotte metro

Aldi 2 miles away
food Lion 4 miles away
save a lot 5 miles away
super walmart, Sams club, Buy Low and 2 more food Lions 6 miles away
Harris Teeter 10 miles away

Where we shop:

Aldi, we love Aldi, they don't carry everything but what they do carry is inexpensive and high quality

Harris Teeter, a little on the high end (like Publix or Hannaford)they can get a little pricey to do your all of your shopping, but they have great specials. And the stores are always so nice.

Sams club, every few weeks we shop Sams for meats, cheese and pet food.

In a pinch i'll go to food Lion but I've never liked them.

No competing grocery stores in my town. Here is (only) HEB and it rules.
Other stores that also carry food are:
Super- Walmart, -Target, SAMS, COSTCO, several ethnic or specialty stores.
