Mostly every town has at least two grocery stores that are in direct competition with eachother.
Some larger areas may have more and of course citys may just have too many to list.

For around my area in Florida it's mostly between Winn Dixie and Publix.
There is at least one of each in even the smallest of the towns I have been to.
We also have Sweetbay,Albertsons and the occasional Whole Foods but mostly you would have to drive a quite a bit to get to one of them.

I live in a very small town. Marsh is the big grocery store here. It is comparable to Publix. We also have Aldi and Lance's New Market competing for the low end. We have Wal-Mart and Meijer. Meijer has the best selection of all.

The Duluth area is interesting. We have one regional chain (Super One) that has four outlets (in the Miller Hill Mall area, in Lakeside, in West Duluth, and in East Duluth) in the City of Duluth itself as well as an outlet in Cloquet, one in Superior, and one in Two Harbors. They have traditionally dominated the local grocery store market.

The chain's competitors are usually national and have only one outlet somewhere in Duluth: Cub Foods in the Miller Hill Mall area; Savers in West Duluth; Piggly Wiggly in Woodland; Super Valu in Pike Lake; and Mount Royal Fine Foods in Kenwood. Recently, Wal-Mart Supercenters (which sell groceries) have opened up in the adjacent city of Superior, Wisconsin and the nearby city of Cloquet; the Duluth (actually Hermantown, but contiguous with the Miller Hill Mall area / US53 corridor) Wal-Mart is being converted to a Supercenter right now.

H.E.B. and Wal-Mart Super Centers are the only real competitors in San Antonio. H.E.B. killed of Albertson's and Kroger's many years ago..

I absolutely love Publixs. Our daughter lives in Windermere Fl and our son near Pensacola.

We live in Wal-Mart country so believe it or not we have no real national or regional chains. We do have 2 smaller markets in town: both have great service and wonderful quality but they can be pricey. Oh, we also have Aldi's not too far away.
