Apparently, legally, custard has to contain egg, whereas ice cream does not:

Frozen Custard is not Ice Cream. It is produced by a totally different process, with minimum egg-yolk standards. Frozen custard must also meet a higher standard of milk-fat than "Soft serve".

Culver's is once of the better fast food joints. Much better than McDonald's or Burger King. It's fast food, so don't expect gourmet, but it's one of the best places you can go around here that has a drive-thru. I've been to a few in Illinois. From what I've seen, they are very clean and staffed with friendly, helpful people, and they have runners who bring stuff out to your car.

Their frozen custard is pretty good, but having been to Andy's, I'm now spoiled. Nobody's frozen custard beats Andy's. At Culver's, get a caramel turtle concrete, or maybe one of their pumpkin pie concretes if they're in season by now. (A concrete is frozen custard mixed with stuff, like a McFlurry but much better.)

The other great fast food chain around here is Portillo's. Hamburgers and typical fast food fare, Culver's. Italian beef and yummy salads, Portillo's.

The Custard of choice in Milwaukee is Kopp's. People will drive 30 minutes to one of their three locations, to stand outside in the parking lot with a cone. It's a tradition ("Ya, hay, let's go down by Kopp's"). The original Kopp's (at 60th and Appleton) is now called Roberts Frozen Custard, but is still very popular. I don't know what the story is there.

There are probably 200 Culvers in Wisconsin, every town has one, and it's just fast food, but both the food and the ambiance (and certainly the malts) are a cut above McDonalds. Culvers is the Walmart of Wisconsin custard, and have probably driven most of the casual mon-and-pop custard stands out of business.

Kopp's has excellent custard but very poor hamburgers. I have had hamburgers there twice and it is a "where's the beef" experience.

Culver's are pretty much locally owned in Wisconsin and Illinois. They find entrepreneurs in the local community. Therefore, they are very active in the local communities supporting sports teams and the like.

This is an important point...whatever training they do for their staff obviously places a high premium on pleasantness and politeness, esp. notable in the management. At each location I've been to in different communities locally, the store managers are out on the floor, checking with individual patrons to make sure their experience is good, in a sincere, non-weird, helpful manner. It can't just be a fluke, it's too consistent. Amazing service for fast-ish food. People are friendly and pleasant and typically aren't acting like they hate their jobs and you for being there and making them do their jobs.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my God, that is Wisconsin's best product ever, screw Miller. It is one of the main things from home that I miss. It is the best fast food restaurant in the f--king world. Their butterburgers (not a burger of butter, but the bun is brushed with butter) are mouthwatering. Their frozen custard is the best. Their chicken is tender but crispy and perfect. ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my god I think I'm going to plan a trip home now.

Culvers is awesome and not just your average fast food chain. Sure they have burgers but they also have potroast, steak sandwhiches, chicken dinners, vegetables yeah thats right veggies at a fast food place, several different types of fried fish meals.

cheese curds are awesome, nothing better after a fat doobie than a big ole order of cheese curds.

they have a flavor of the day which changes everyday which is cool they have some cool and unique flavors. custard doesnt really taste anything like gelato but its like gelato in teh sense its a much richer and better quality ice cream. i like it and its good but sometimes i do just like a dairyqueen sometimes custard is a bit rich for my tastebuds.

culvers is clean its got a sitdown atmosphere thats more restaurant like than most fast food restaurants. the food and staff are definately a step above the rest of teh hotel chains.

on a side note try fatburger if you have one near you, another higher quality burger place thats delishius.
