On unmarked salt and pepper shakers, one has more holes than the other. Which is salt, which is pepper?

I would think one with more numerous holes and maybe smaller would be for pepper.

Salt has more holes. Pepper has larger and fewer holes.

That's obviously is not only your dilemma...
Which goes in the shaker with more holes -- salt or pepper?

I would think that numerous small holes are more suitable for salt ( yeah! that ionized, uniform, "fine", white, cheap, table salt ).

Get a pepper grinder and use whole pepper corns. Keep your salt in a little bowl and serve it by the pinch.

I hate salt shakers, its impossible to control how much I use. If I have a shaker provided for me, I shake the correct amount out into my hand, and then throw it on the food or apply it by the pinch.

^^^ I agree. I observed people using salt shakers were shaking... and shaking... and shaking, without even tasting the dish first. Mindless and habitually.

My husband and I are diametrically opposed. He says salt needs fewer holes, I say pepper does.

All holes are the same size.

Salt has more holes. My set has 3 holes on the salt, 2 on pepper. Not sure if there's any reasoning behind it.
