Default Does anybody else NOT like Thanksgiving food?

Besides being a gloomy holiday for personal reasons, one thing I don't like about Thanksgiving is the food. We usually celebrate it with my late father's side of the family, and the dishes they traditionally bring represent about the worst in Midwestern cooking. The quality is not low; the problem is traditional Midwestern fare does not appeal to my taste buds. There's the turkey, which is almost tasteless; the green bean casserole (I hate anything involving green beans, except Ethiopian fasoli, but then the green beans are so cooked that they don't taste like green beans), and a number of other awful dishes I can't remember right now. I've traditionally gotten a minimal amount of turkey, a minimal amount of mashed potatoes, gravy, and a bunch of buns - but to make matters worse, in recent years they have switched over to sweet "Hawaiian" buns! Therefore, I probably consume less calories on Thanksgiving then I do on your average day of the year. Is anybody else the same way?

(My favorite cuisines are Indian and Ethiopian, by the way)

Sounds to me you just do like your Relatives cooking..

Its understandable. Your palette is more attuned to highly seasoned and complex flavors, based on your previous threads. A least that is what you brain is telling you.

I find that alcohol usually helps me when I'm in these types of situations.

I have some relatives from the Okie side of my family that are extremely bland cooks when is comes to most dishes. However, their dessert dishes are the best I have ever tasted. So they get tasked with making pies, cakes, candy etc for the holiday and other year round get togethers.

What do you bring to these potlucks...

I don't like turkey (tastes like iron to me), but I love all the starches at Thanksgiving - mashed pos, sweet pos, stuffing, and rolls - mmm carb heaven I do also like cranberry sauce and pie Although I eat a lot of carbs in my daily life, one of my favorite cuisines, like the OP, is Indian. I also love Thai, Jamaican, and other cuisines known for spicy fare.

I love the aroma of Thanksgiving cooking. That said, I don't like stuffing, pumpkin anything, and would prefer something spicy. Never had green bean casserole~~just doesn't look like anything that I could bring myself to eat, but people love it so it must taste good. We are not casserole eaters. I like turkey but get tired of it very quickly. We have mashed potatoes and mashed sweets often, so I don't consider that Thanksgiving fare. We always have apple pie for dessert on T day, but we also have that throughout the year. Basically, I just think it is too much food and maybe too much emphasis on the food.

Not crazy about turkey. And, would rather have a baked potatoe than mashed. And, this year we're only having hot turkey sandwhiches. It'll be kept as low-key as possible. And, peach pie for dessert, compliments of Marie Callendar. Christmas will probably be spaghetti or something Italian.

I don't like turkey.
I don't like cranberries sauce.
I don't like sweet potato "gunk" with marshmallows.
I don't like pumpkin pie... or ANY pie, for that matter.
I'm sure that there are various other things on the table that I don't like either.
And, it's funny, because I'm not considered a finicky eater.

With all that in mind, some stuffing and mashed potatoes do not make a meal.

So, no, I'm not a fan of Thanksgiving feasts.

I make a turkey because it's traditional and the fam is looking for it but I don't eat it. I prefer to eat the turkey later as sandwiches. lol We also have one or two non-traditional items on the menu, i.e. lamb, steak, roast beef, lasagna, crab cakes, shrimp, etc.
