Well I do like a nice MacinTosh(sP)might be a little tarp. But sweetness: gala, Pink Lady, and a really good fresh Red Delicious.
There are soo many "new" apples out that it is like having a wine tasting..which some stores should do??!
I like the tart apples for pies and cider. If I ever get land I'll plant some apple trees and try to make cider, or at least to have as many pies as I can stand.
Granny Smith
Winesap
Macintosh
Red Delicious
Golden Russet ( In case Mr. Brink comes by)
The variety that was most recently picked. They decline rapidly after picking, literally within days. Most people, who have never eaten a fresh picked apple, do not know that.
We LOVE all apples but a very favorite & sweetest is Honey Crisp. They cost more, but are very worth it. They make great pies, too. Only thing if your going to use honey crisp in a pie I would use half of another favorite apple of yours. Honey crisp are very, very juicy. They'll make your pie too juicy if you use all H C.
We also love gala, fuji, golden delious.
My name is 8635AngelValley and I am a Honey Crisp addict. They are soooo goood.
We recently discovered Cameo apples. They were the best apple we have ever eaten.
Ours came fresh from the trees in the NC mountains this past fall (2011). They were large apples and I do believe that makes a difference with this variety. We got a few at another stop that were 1/2 the size and they were not tasty...we would never get a Cameo again had we had these small/medium sized ones first. We also have since tried a couple small/medium Cameo apples that we see in the grocery from time to time. Not good and not worth the money.
The large Cameo apples we had fresh from the orchard were delicious and are now our favorite apple. Sweet & very fragrant.
