I don't buy them because I prefer to make my charitable donations to poor or disadvantaged people who need help. Girls scout fundraising just goes to social and recreational activities for the scouts themselves, most of whom are not needy.
And, I bake my own cookies.

I lived in Illinois in 2004, and they were $4 a box even back then. It's a donation to the Girl Scouts, not the value of the cookies. There are so many worthy charities needing funds that I have to be selective, and I prefer to support homeless animals and people rather than the scouts.
And I am tired of the Girl Scouts selling cookies in the front of every grocery store I walk into. As soon as I walk in the door I am approached by several of them, and I say "no thank you" and then I am approached by the same girls on my way out. No, I didn't want to buy cookies five minutes ago and I still don't.

I love Girl Scout cookies and look forward to getting them every year. Back in the day, I sold more than a few boxes of them, myself.
It's nice to be able to support a such a positive organization, while indulging in some yummy cookies too. Those peanut butter ones are sooo good.

We quit buying them when we learned how little the troops actually get from the price of the box of cookies. It just seemed to me that the girls were being exploited. Some of them are quite aggressive which can be annoying. When we were kids, almost no one but the "town" kids could afford to join the scouts and since we live in a poorer community, we have very few scouts.
Anybody know the % of money going to the actual troop per box?

Girl Scout cookies are horrible at any price. If they gave them away it would be too much. I buy them from the neighbors' girls (no reason to punish them) and keep them in my car to give to someone who is panhandling me. Or, toss them in the trash. I might have eaten one a couple years ago just to re-confirm how horrible they are. The Girl Scouts are a menace and their cookies don't help.

When they were $1 per box I asked that question and it was 14 cents per box.

Now I don't like cookies and nothing they have appealed to me or my diet so I am told the $3.50 I gave will pay for a box to be sent to the Military on my behalf..... So I am told.

LOL, yes they really do send them to the military.

That's a crock. There's no "affordability" issues about being a girl scout. They have programs to cover the basic registration costs for girls who can't afford to pay the fee--maybe people just don't want to fill out the form.
Once in a while we would want to do some activity that a couple of the girls in our troop couldn't afford, so others who were better off would kick in and cover the expense for them.

They have contracts with bakeries, so the bakeries are making a profit--they aren't baking and shipping cookies for free. The troops get a certain amount, and the council gets a certain amount.
