Which do you prefer? I use only real butter for cooking, baking and serving at the table.
At least butter is natural, while margarine consists of artificial chemicals.
When I saute, I like to use a 50/50 combination of olive oil and butter.
I switched to real butter about 10 years ago and thought I would never go back. Well about 6 months ago, when butter went to $4 lb I decided to get one of those huge country crock containers. It didn't take me long to remember why I switced to butter. And yes, you are right, butter is the real thing. I too mix butter with OO when sauteing.
It's my understanding that margarine is worse for your health than butter, unless it is a kind of margarine that actually costs more than butter. But I don't know, I just use butter because it tastes so damned good, and is perfect for cooking. It takes me a month or two to use a pound, and I buy the generic brand. I haven't eaten any margarine in maybe 20 years.
Margarine, by the way, is the only word in American English with a Soft-G followed by A.
Only because an incorrect pronouncation has become part of American English lexicon.
