Default Japanese Curry: Tried it? Like it?

Japanese curry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Being a curry afficianado, you might think I might look down on Japanese 'curry'. It was, ironically, actually introduced via the British as a sort of beef and vegetable stew since the days the British Navy were in Japan in the 1860s, and has remained relatively unchanged since then. Still, I've grown to have a taste for it, well a specific brand, 'Vermont' Japanese curry (not sure why the name 'Vermont' as it has no connection with New England or the US) in particular, which is quite yummy with carrots, potato over a bed of Udon, or with katsu (chicken or pork deep fried in breadcrumbs) over rice.

It's a rich brown and has a some gluey texture (don't let that put you off). The taste is quite savoury, salty, meaty, stocky and yeasty, pretty much like a rich beef stew. There is a 'hot' version but of course to me it's not hot at all.

So if anyone has tried it, what do you think? Do you like it?

If not does it sound appealing to you at all?

I find it to be extremely filling and satisfying.

I eat Japanese curry about 3-4 times a month and I really love it. It's yummy with chicken katsu. It's really different than Thai and Indian curries, it's not really hot and it's a bit sweet.

I love all curries...
Especially my home country's style (rendang curry).

Japanese style (sweeter) is awesome with rice as well.

Beef rendang is quite possibly the best curry on earth, or equal best.
