Heinz makes a reduced sugar one. I think some of the organic/health food section brands like Annie's and John Muir make ones without corn syrup, but the probably still have cane sugar, and sugar is sugar.

The purpose of ketchup is to disguise the flavor of badly prepared food, if HVRD can do this better...why not?

A couple of restaurants that I have been to that feature gourmet burgers and house-made veggie burgers state on the menu: We recommend NOT using ketchup on our gourmet burgers. However, ketchup is available upon request."

"gourmet" burgers are a trend, here, too. (ground beef being so non-pedestrian and fancy and all. :roll eyes: )

However, those places actually make and serve ramekins of their in-house, homemade ketchup).

These restaurants serve burgers that feature such excellent house recipes that you wouldn't want to mask the unique flavors with ketchup.

I've never seen anyone request ketchup at all, and we often dine there.

It depends upon the food whether the ketchup masks or contributes to the total flavor. Cold baked ham is a good example. Put some Hunt's Ketchup on it and it is really good. Or cold roast beef. It no more masks the flavor than bread and butter or mustard, mayo, and other condiments mask the flavor in a sandwich.

On the other hand, it masks the flavor of a subtle flavor. Do not put it on pancakes or Oysters Rockefeller.

Different foods require diferent condiments. Many foods are best with none.

Yes, and most of the other brands just do their best to copy Heinz tomato ketchup, often a little cheaper. It really is one of the great success stories of the global food business, and is one of the most recognized brand names in the world. Another one of the original 57 varieties that H.J. Heinz trumpeted on his labels was mushroom ketchup, which somehow was not as big a hit.

Anyway, I don't use a lot of ketchup myself, and usually abstain unless a restaurant makes their own, like the curry ketchup one place offers that I really like. At home I keep a Smoked Tomato Dipping Sauce that is a thin ketchup made from fire roasted tomatoes.

But I rarely put ketchup on my fries. Instead, if I add anything to fries, I dip them in mayonnaise, like Belgians do. (The Belgians actually invented "French" fries, you know.)

In any case, I know parents who swear by tomato ketchup because their kids will eat anything as long as they can have ketchup with it. I just don't see that ever happening with Ranch Dressing.
