When I make a tossed salad I sprinkle crushed and broken pita chips on the top, just before I add the dressing. They add a nice crunch and interesting contrast.
I usually use the plain sea salt pita chips, but sometimes use the chipotle flavored chips.
I love adding some chopped Walnuts for crunch. A little goes a long way but so tasty ! And I add a teeny amount of Argan oil to my home made vinaigrette too. It is very potent a flavour so you hardly need any but it adds a nice nuttiness to the dressing.
I use a dried salad herb mix imported from Germany that I get in a little hole-in-the wall deli. This isnt Knorr or anything like that...comes in a littel cellophane package. I put it in a tupperware container and store it in the fridge and use it with oil & vinegar, with a touch of salt and pepper for a dressing.
For a savory salad we love thinly sliced fennel along with shavings of parmesan reggiano. I've added a sliced banana to a regular green salad - really good.
