It's a dark paste, manufactured from brewer's yeast, a byproduct of the beer industry. It has some flavoring added from vegetables and spices. It is salty and savory and somewhat reminiscent of beef bouillon, but rather than being used to make broth, it is spread on toast as a snack.
It's wildly popular in Australia. As the saying goes, there's no accounting for taste.
I buy it at the local "World Market" (for those who don't know, it's a chain specializing in imported odd'n'ends). Good stuff.
