I had them as an appetizer once at a southern restaurant, and they were great. They certainly weren't just cooked in salt water though becuase there was defineitly some vinegariness to them. Suprisingly good.

I've never had any with vinegar. I know all the old farmers cleaned all the dirt off and boiled them in salt and water and I always followed suit!
I remember 2 decades ago when we moved from Texas to Alabama(thanks to the Army) and driving into the town we would live in, we saw a "Boiled Peanuts" stand and decided to stop and see what the big deal was. Yuck. Imagine mushy watery peanuts. We hadn't even got to our new house yet and I knew we were in for a long few years.
I always used to laugh at South Alabama Motor Speedway as the announcer would call over the intercom specials at the snack stand like "Bolled Penis, 50 Cent", which in regular english is "Boiled Peanuts, 50 cents".
