IMO, the taste of just the nuts is very similar. When you compare a prepared dish it's not apples to apples anymore. The crust, the added sugar and other ingredients also make the dish. Taste just a plain pecan and a plain walnut and then compare them.
I think they are two totally different taste sensations, myself. Walnut pie is nothing at all like pecan pie. (I would never say "ugh" to either one, however!!!)
I care! Having lived in the south for decades, I adore pecan pie, and all things pecan. Even had pecan trees in the yard. Pecan candy, roasted pecans. One day I took a trip to St Louis, and had a walnut pie. Walnut pie! UGH!
Can't say I've ever had walnut pie, or have even heard of it. So its not that popular here.
I love both. I especially love butter pecan ice cream and have tried to find honey walnut ice cream to try that, but have never been able to find it in the stores I frequent. I also especially love pecan pie and walnuts in brownies.
New Mexico recently has toggled back and forth with Georgia as being the top producer of pecans in the United States. The pecan orchards along the Rio Grande near Las Cruces are a sight to see!
To me, pecan pie is absolutely gross, which seriously shocked me because I like everything in it.
That said, I like both nuts, but for an apples to apples comparison as to how they are in baked goods, make snowball (aka mexican wedding, russian teacake, etc) cookies. Pretty much nuts, butter, powdered sugar & flour. We prefer walnuts in ours, I am sure others will have different opinions.

Wha -- what?! lol
I'm just jumping in here to add that I also think walnuts can be bitter, while pecans aren't.
They are 2 different things. I agree that pecans are sweeter and walnuts have a more bitter taste. That doesn't make one better than the other. I love walnuts in a salad or in banana bread, while I also love a piece of good pecan pie.
I can't tell the difference but it seems to me walnuts turn oily or bad faster than pecans, pecans are more expensive around here.
That is true and I think that is why some people hate walnuts. They are awful when rancid.
