At our office they are soliciting for food item for the holiday party. First they had to decided: Potluck or restaurant? During office hours or after work? Etc.
After some debate it looks like we will be doing a potluck lunch. Some people wanted to go to a restaurant so they could order drinks. In any case, they'll be passing around a sign-up sheet and everyone will bring in something. In my experience this tends to lead to a lunch of side dishes.
So that got me thinking what other offices do for a holiday party. Do you guys go out or have food at the office? Catered or homemade? What's it like where you work?
its a different world today compared to years ago, concerning office parties.
today, no work environment ,,even off premises, should have anything to do with alcohol involved,,,too much liability
anyways,,,,just have the bring your own buffet,(lunch) quick, easy, no one gets hurt, no ones runs their mouth after a few drinks, and no one is on someones lap after a few drinks..
One of the last work parties i went to 20 yrs ago -with drinking involved, we started to tell jokes,,,and one woman told an off color joke and we laughed,,,but then a guy told one less,,,offensive and she went off the deep end,,because she didnt like the guy,,,and filed a sexual harassment complaint,,,against him....even with the other woman around the table defending the guy, saying her jokes were worse, the guy got written up for harassment.
from that point on.... I liked a quick holiday lunch free for all buffet, no one gets hurt...
Each office has their own party. My boss takes us to a nice restaurant. We leave at noon (must use vacation or sick time though, we don't get paid for it).
The company does a party the Friday before Christmas for all employees. It's catered. Then he (the owner) usually lets us go home early
I used to work in a office a a couple of times we went out to a night club and had a room to ourselves and had food catered. Other times we had an in office after work party with catered food.
My feeling is that Office Parties are torture. I don't really want forced socialization with my coworkers, even though I like them.
My preference would be a catered lunch during work hours. If the company is having a holiday party, then I don't expect to have to supply the food.

Wow your boss makes you use your leave to go to the office party?
Yeah for us if we have the party at a restaurant, it's optional for us to go. You're supposed to take the time off to do it, but they never enforce it. Plus not everyone wants to spend money for the meal, so there's always a few people who stay back. If it is a potluck or in the office, you also don't have to go, but they'd rather everyone come even if you didn't bring a dish.
I work for a large company in Silicon Valley. We have a huge event usually in SF or San Mateo. It has food and drinks provided. There's so many people there that it's not uncommon to go through the evening with only seeing a few people you know, unless you designate a time and spot to meet up with co-workers. It's fun, but I do miss smaller gatherings too.

I'm self-employed and work from home. My dog Artie and I have a party every day.
The hospital where my husband works is ginormous and they have a huge catered party in the winter. Spouses attend, so I get my holiday party fix that way.
