Red Wine Allergies
NOOOOO! Somehow, some way, I must have developed an allergic reaction to red wine. The last 4 or 5 times I have had it (different kinds as well) I have started to break out in hives all over my neck and face. I have never had this problem before but it seems like it popped up suddenly. The doctor said that it probably has something to do with the preservatives that the FDA requires EVEN with some imports! Anyone else have this problem? Thankfully, white doesn't seem to give me the same issues!

It's probably the sulfites in the wine. They can cause allergic reactions. You may be able to handle a wine that doesn't have extra sulfites added as preservatives. Check out this link.

I had the same type of problem. I had allover hives and swelling joints. I stopped the red wine for a few months, then switched to a different brand. Haven't had any more problems. Good luck, I know it's disappointing.

How interesting. My husband and I have an occasional glass of red wine. About two months ago he had a glass and became violently ill - almost like food poisoning. It took about 4 days for him to really recover. I had a mild reaction. But since then, he can not tolerate red wine.
Do you think it's because of sulfites?

Be glad it's just red wine...
I am allergic to ALL alcohol...I get beet red (fire engine red), my face gets so hot it feels like it is 500 degrees, it feels swollen, and it extends down to my chest. All this happens within a sip or two. My last drink of alcohol was Dec 1999. It just hurts my face too much to even try so I just don't. I would love to be able to drink but the thought of it hurts. That's exactly what it is;
I'm allergic to sulfites; when i used to drink wine; I used to itch in the throat and all over depending on the amount I had consumed.

I had purchased several bottles of one particular wine and got hives. I discontinued that wine and tried another without problem. Some of the reds have more sulfites than others I think. I know Trader Joe's has a red without sulfites and it's pretty good.

Since sulfites naturally occur in the process of wine-making, there's no such thing as sulfite-free. However, most organic wines have a significantly lower amount so you might be ok with them. There aren't too many you can purchase nation-wide, since sulfites act as a preservative, but Lolonis Vineyards comes to mind.

This happens to my sister. She gets violently ill then passes out. The only brand she can drink is Sutter Home.
