Delivery drivers pay for gas and car expenses to bring food to your door because you don't feel like going out to pick it up. That justifies a larger tip than you give at at restaurant, in my opinion.
Some of them pay for gas. Lots of them use company cars and/or get mileage. Plus, like I said, many charge a delivery fee. Besides, the personal service you get at a restaurant including taking the order, prepping certain food items, running food/stuff back and forth and being conversational for an hour is not even close to the same as the 30 seconds it takes you to walk from your car to my door to take my money.

What about the time it takes to drive to your house?
Maybe some delivery people can chime in here but in our area all pizza and restaurant delivery drivers provide their own vehicle, gas and insurance.
If I couldn't afford to give at least a 20% tip I would get in my car and go pick it up myself.
It's not a matter of if I can afford it or not. Servers at restaurants get paid like $2/hr and they work their butts off for tips. Delivery people get at least minimum wage, plus the travel reimbursement, plus tips and all they do is drive, walk 30 feet, exchange money, repeat.
It's not the same thing, and they don't get 20% unless they do something extraordinary to deserve it. Also, the amount of work a delivery driver does is not proportional to the order in the same way that it is in a restaurant, meaning 20% is even more absurd.

It's not extraordinary to deliver to you perhaps. I reckon I'm bribing them to just keep delivering pizzas at all. Imagine getting shot or robbed over 20 bucks in change and a pizza.
