I bought star anise and crunched some up and put it in a salad. It is too hard that way so there must be a way to prepare it. I asked in the grocery store and no one knew.
Nickerman, it is used in Asian cooking, such as stews and a flavoring for meats, usually removed after the spice imparts it's flavor. I have never heard of it used in a salad. If it was used in a salad, it would be in ground form, not a whole star anise; or even 'crunched up'.
It is also one of five spices that make up Chinese 5 spice. All of them ground, of course.
It's normally used as a seasoning and removed. Use in things like soups and stews, goes well in chinese and other Asian dishes.

this, they sell spice bags you can put these in, with other non dissolved spices so you can bag them and toss it into the pot and remove them all at once. not sure what the bag is called but its a large version of a tea bag
As already stated, star anise is a spice used in various recipes. Unless it’s used whole in a liquid as flavoring (and removed before serving), it’s used ground into a powder.
Like a bay leaf or rosemary twig—you don’t eat it whole or chopped up.
Anise can also refer to fennel, but that’s a vegetable, and a different thing altogether.
I can't imagine it would taste good crunched up in a salad. I do wonder if one could make a tea out of it. I love the smell.
I learned my lesson the hard way
