Tonight was butternut squash soup. I got them at the farmer's market Saturday and we were going to try to make it earlier in the week but a life emergency got in the way - fortunately they were fine (as is my daughter) - I think squash keeps really well.
We had tried to make it once before but I got acorn squash for some reason thinking they were butternut, and couldn't figure out why it tasted so strange. It wasn't horrible soup, but it wasn't what I was expecting. Tonight's turned out really well - I didn't make it, my wife did (she did the Acorn squash too and learned a few tricks). Had a salad with fresh vegetables and apples in a simple vinagrette.
We grew butternut one year and they kept in a basket in the garage all year.
Glad daughter's okay!!!
I just had a reply from NMS and she is OK. Seems her hubby can cook. I'll let her give us the run down when she is up to it. She is going to be fine. That's the good news.
For dinner, I think we are postponing until tomorrow. Wife was ill last night and tonight it's my turn I guess. I think iced tea is about all I'm up to facing at the moment. I might have a snack of cheese and crackers later on. Time will tell.

Elston I have never seen a banana bread recipe with grahamn crackers in it. Sounds interesting. If you make it you will have to let us know how it turned out. I am done baking for awhile 4 full loaves, dozen and a half muffins, mini loaf should last us a little while.
Jesse-it's torture-I miss clams,mussels-all fresh seafood.
Lacey - living in Louisiana I get alot of fresh seafood. Fish, shrimp, crabs, oysters, and crawfish (allthough lots of people think thats bait). You are right though. Clams and mussels are missing. We do bisques down here but not much on chowers. Maybe it doesn't get cold enough for chower????
The evening was supposed to be dinner downtown followed by a chamber music concert, but the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra's musicians went on strike today, and they canceled the concert as a result. But dinner at Tutto Pasta on State Street was still wonderful: a really fine home-made cream of mushroom soup followed by fettucini crema di scampi, which featured a heavily-garlicked cream sauce with lots of shrimp. The spouse had minestrone soup, one of his faves, and calamari in a spicy tomato sauce that he pronounced excellent. We were both too full for dessert, sadly; the dessert tray looked inviting, but we'd have had to take it home in our pockets. And at least I'm getting a great Bach orchestral suite on the radio, which is almost as good as a live chamber music concert.
I send wishes for speedy healing to NMS, and especially to AJZJ's mom, and wishes to all for a grand weekend with lots of wonderful food and friendship!
