I see a lot more soups and stews and one-dish dinners mentioned lately. Is it the weather change? Is it the economy? For us, it's a little of both.

Charley I know I am anticipating the cooler temps so I can start with my stews, chili's, and soups. DH won't eat them during warm weather and I am starving for some great comfort smelling stews and soups simmering all day long on the stove.

For me it is both. One, although the weather doesn't really reflect it outside, it is fall. Fall means soup.

Two, we still haven't restocked from pre-hurricane so I have been trying to stretch our food dollar and soups and stews do that really well.

Three, trying to reduce our grocery bill for a family of five. I have been trying to add some meals into our routine that aren't meat based. So once or twice every few weeks I will make a lentil or bean soup or dish.

Four, variety is the spice of life.

Variety is definitely the spice of life ... but we are watching our budget very closely. Anything we can do to drive down costs of food and utilities is something we will consider strongly. We have a goal of being in our Delaware dream home by Summer 2013 and we worried about the value of our current home. So I'm spending a little time each day doing many repairs and updates myself to have it ready for sale (hopefully the market is back by then) and watching our pennies when shopping for food and other items. Some of the recipes here are marvelous - and I'll be watching for economical soups, stews, chilis, etc.

There won't be many truffles or a lot of saffron in anything we're making for a while.

I hear you there. I stopped making a lot of dishes I loved that required a lot of expensive ingredients. I have definitely gone back to simple food.

Charley usually I always keep a pot of soup on my stove. They are so easy and so economic and in my house everyone is welcome to a cup or two. My kids may be grown and gone but they are always here with a spoon.......LOL
I guess it is a Mom thing.

I AM COLD CHARLEY!!!! MY BONES NEED WARMIN'!!!! LOL

the only way to do it sometimes is with a good old fashioned bowl of hot soup... and that soup is low in wt watchers points... that is a plus for hubby. SO it is soup for dinner.

I guess being a military wife for many years I learned to cook frugally and that meant lots of soups, stews, pasta dishes and I've just carried it with me.

Weather has a lot to do with it especially out here-the need for comfort food is intensified. Guess that (and missing family) led me to put on 30 lbs in 3 yrs here!! But I'm almost back to fighting weight!!!!
