I could get many pecans of my two pecan trees, but I don't really bother with them.
1) I am afraid of eating a worm
2) They are smaller pecans, not the same variety you get in the store, so a lot
more work for less reward
3) I am afraid the squirrels of Richardson, TX will arm themselves and declare
nuclear war on my house if I touch "their" pecans.
That's funny. I wish we had a pecan tree. (but, I do have a lemon tree which I love!) There is a park not too far from a house we used to live that had some pecan trees. This park used to be a private ranch, still has it's old ranch house and it's neat. Anyway, when our kids were little we used to go there a lot, because 1.it was right next to a public library,2. it had a really nice playground equipments, 3. they have peacocks, chickens, and rabbits all over the place and kids thought they were neat. So, one day kids were playing and I'm watching a lady picking up pecans of the ground, but I did not know they were pecans. Once I figured out what they were, I too started picking them up. They were tasty!
I think you are correct about the pecans elston. I think they drop out of the dried and opened husks off the tree. I could be wrong but even the ones my neighbors brought me were already out of the husks--they were just rotted. It's the black walnuts that are still in their husks---STILL!! Ha!
I think my Dad used to say they buried the blackwalnut and let the husks rot off.....but I am remembering from at least 50 years ago and he was probably remembering over a similar span...
I do remember that with blackwalnuts and butternuts often when you did crack them open (and that is no easy task) they were either shriveled or a weevel had got in there first. I guess that is why their nutmeats command a premium price.
Probably so! I just know that I think I am willing to pay that price---trouble is even finding them in the local grocery stores here. I did find one place to get them but it's over an hour and a half drive away. With the price of gas and our truck it would be cheaper to buy online and that's sure not cheap either. What I do for my parrot! And thanks you again Amber!

I roasted a chubby little? chicken Friday night, it's STILL doing dinner duty
I think tomorrow night's dinner's gonna have to be ice cream and cake
Tonight will be rosemary chicken breasts with veggies and mashed potatoes (if I have enough) If not then I'll just make chicken snadwiches or something.
The nuts are for your parrot!??????? Cant he crack and pick the meat himself; my amazon could crack brazil nuts.
Ha! Ha! Sure she can. I'm not talking about getting the nut meat from the shell I'm talking about getting the nut out of the husk. And yes, she more then likely could do that too, no problem but who knows what is on the husk?? Whatever is floating in the air! I won't take any risks with her. She's my baby. I owned my last parrot for 23 years and when she died I was sick for weeks! She was lacking in some vit. so now I am so careful about everything with this bird!
Cyn do you know not to run a self cleaning oven with the bird any where near.....my friend's beautiful white ****-a-tiel became terribly ill and never fully recovered from that. Birds respiratory system is very susceptible......maybe that was why they took canaries into the mines.
