When I see or sometimes hear the letters BBQ I gather it's with a sauce, as in ribs or chicken. Barbecue spelled out or spoken can mean that also, but more likely things cooked on a grill without BBQ sauce.
"Back yard BBQ" means slow cooking with wood out in your back yard then having a bunch of friends over because you can't possibly eat the amount of meat that you BBQ.
GOOD BBQ requires no sauce whatsoever, but you can use it if you really must.
I've found that barbecue means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Especially regionally.
Please say which option you voted for and what region you most identify with.
all of the above would fit, but I remember when our X daughter in law, who was from NC informed us: a barbecue was what you cooked on when you grill. The get together is called a cookout. To this day, almost 20 years later, a barbecue, to me, is what she said. It was about the only thing she ever said that made any sense I will add!! shame on me!!!!
its regional...up north,,most dont grill year-round- we put away the grills in the winter-most have gas grills on porches, decks, or back yard, and we have blizzards up here
bbq and grilling is interchangeable up here
this weekend(memorial day weekend) is the traditionally the bbq weekend that kicks off the bbq/grilling summer season- again, weather is a big factor- if it rains out- it's indoor cooking, not grilling
because we dont grill year round-we probly arent the connisours as in the south- slow cooking briskets, pork butts, and ribs,,,isnt as popular,,- it's mostly fire up the gas grill and cook steaks, burgers and yes ribs,,,some will bake ribs in the oven for a few hours and finish on the grill with some sauce.
marinating steaks are growing in popularity up here,,either buying them at a store marinated,or doing it yourself
sirloin/steak-house tips (from bottom sirloin flap meat) is popular in the northeast for grilling, as is a rib-eye, strip steaks, t-bone, porterhouse, tenderloin- chicken parts, and pork tenderloin, chops/ribs are fairly popular up here with burgers and hot dogs
It was hard to vote as I think of all the choices except the last one. I don't like barbeque sauce generally unless it's vinegar based. I prefer the grilling of dry rubs or smoking indirectly for flavor. I do provide bbq sauce for those that like it.
