I would assume it prevents fruit flies since they comes when fruit is too ripe and moldy. I have to try this, it is very interesting. I assume you use white vinegar?
As I said in the OP I've been doing this for some time and the results are terrific. I was afraid of a vinegar taste but it doesn't taste at all. Also good point about using a separate bowl or container rather than the kitchen sink.
Yes to white vinegar but since it's gonna be rinsed anyway I don't think it would be terrible to use apple cider vinegar or whatever you have. Plain white is cheap and used all around the house and laundry for so many other things.
Okay, I'm being picky here. The picture states "Cleaning fruit-Chemical-free." Typical vinegar is roughly 5% Acetic acid (Ethanoic acid) - and that's a chemical. So now you can rib me for being picky - I can take it .
