When I can, I go to our year-round market, which is about 15 miles away. Our local farm market will open April 15--can't wait!

Not necessarily. You have to ask if they are a producer-only farmers' market or a public farmers' market. By law, they cannot misrepresent themselves when asked. A producer-only farmers' market features only farmers who grow their stuff. A public farmers' market features both types of vendors. In the latter case, the real farmers make efforts to distinguish themselves, such as with bold signs proclaiming "Locally Grown!".

good points

One farmers market I stopped at a few years ago ... I noticed pineapples and coconuts on the table,,and asked " where were these grown"?? and she said "locally" ...and where is locally I asked ?
from a greenhouse she said "atmosphere temperature regulated" ..I said where,,,what town what farm???

she wouldn't answer me and got busy with someone else..

I thought,,,,what a scam,,,but this lady is brilliant,,,,, buying the items from Hannaford and doubling the price on them,,,and signs saying locally grown..... all the tourists didn't seem to care,, they were at a farmers market,,,thats all they cared about

I'd love to see a coconut palm in a greenhouse. Those trees get up to 80 feet tall! She obviously thinks her customers are dumb.

that got me to pondering,,,maybe I should get a table at the farmers market,,,dress up like an amish guy... bring a horse.. and goat . and do the same,,buy all this stuff from Hannaford,,take the little stickers off,,bang it up a bit so it doesn't look pristine,,, and sell it for 3x as much.

Our farmers' markets are legit and the big one in Arcata features Humboldt Bay oysters as well as produce from Humboldt and Trinity Counties. Just started up today for the season.

I really don't know. In all the time it's been there, we went once and found no reason to return. The Food sections of the newspapers here always do a feature story on the markets around when they do start and I haven't seen that yet so I'd guess not yet.

Plus, it's currently snowing, with 50 mph wind gusts - so yeah - probably not open yet.

We have year-round farmer's markets here, with wonderful produce from Fresno, Redlands, the Imperial Valley, etc. There are always local citrus, avocados, and all kinds of vegetables. We have local strawberries all year round but they do taste a bit better when it is consistently warmer.

Summer is not my favorite season but I do look forward to the day when cherries and peaches appear. I won't even buy them at a regular supermarket because they are so superior at the farmer's market.

Our market is producer-only.
