It's not my first turkey but it's my first turkey that doesn't have one of those pop out thermometers.
It's a 16 pounder with no directions whatsoever.
I searched and found that a turkey that size should cook for at least 5 hours.
I'm wondering now if I should just do that or go out and buy a thermometer.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to doing it in a few days. I enjoy it.

If you have a meat thermometer-internal temp should be 160 deg and let rest 1/2 hr.

They sell those disposable pop up timers in just about every grocery store now. They are white with the red color button in middle....usually only about $1 for two here. Hope you find one.

I swear by the turkey bags - they cut down on the time, no basting required and you just cut it open the last 1/2 hour or so so the skin gets nice and crispy

I have NEVER made a turkey myself. I am a grandmother. Crazy I know. I've watched and helped and know I can do it but never had to. The first years my mother in law cooked them for us---she did a great job. Now my husband does it. I do all the sides.

We're using a bag, too. My husband swears by it! He used them during his bachelor years and said it came out really well.

My Mom has never cooked a turkey either and she is in her early 60s! She cooking one for the first time tomorrow, too!! She joked that we should compare how both of ours turn out. Heehee

Happy Thanksgiving Everybody!

My turkey is as hard as a rock still, so this morning I put it in the sink and filled the sink with water. PennsylvaniaBoy95 (he was a late bloomer) is home today to baby it and change the cold water.

Mine's in the cooler on the deck in brine! It is killing me to work today - usually I am home!

No need to use a store bought bag for cooking turkeys. No need for using up expensive aluminum foil either. Just re-use a paper shopping bag. Oh for the first timers here please consider a turkey just a giant chicken in regards to health and sanitation. Wash hands and prep surfaces such as counter tops or cutting boards after contact with the bird. Don't rely on those pop up thermometers, get a good quality meat thermometer. Last but not least, if you are not going to cook it with stuffing inside at least reach in there and remove all it innards that are wrapped in paper that may be in there, Wash the bird inside and out, drain well and pat dry even the inside with a towell. Wash the heck out of your hands before touching any other food or food prepping item, especially things like salad greens that won't get cooked.
There is nothing worse than making friends and family members sick for this precious time of the year due to not following basic food safety practices.
