Default Shortening question

I only use shortening at the holidays.....I know, I know...not the best food to use but my breads do not taste near as good when I use another fat.

My question is.....should I store it in the refrig or cupboard??? I used to buy it and share it wth my neighbor so we only bought enough to use at one time. Now I am on my own and since the smallest package was too big, I need to keep it longer.

Unless you use your shortening frequently and can consume it in less than three months, it should be fine in a cool cupboard, if longer it can get old and smell rancid. I only use shortening to grease pans, otherwise I use butter in my pie crusts, cookies, cakes, breads and other goodies. I used to use margarine or shortening till I became aware that it was a plasticized hydrogenated vegetable oil which can be bad for you.

I love that shortening comes in sticks now. Easier to measure. I don't use it frequently so I store it in the refrigerator just to be on the safe side.
