I see no reason for anyone to wait for others when it is an appetizer.
For the same reason that it's polite to wait until everyone receives their entree to begin eating ... it's rude to be eating in front of people who don't yet have anything of their own to eat. They're stuck sitting there watching you chow down.
yes,,i think everyone should wait til they are served before you "dig in"
particularly if the one paying for the meal has yet to be served.... I caught hell as a young man for taking a bite before the grandfather was even served and he had stated he would be paying,,,so it was doubly disrespectful..
I have to chuckle at these going out to eat table manner threads
go back 30-40 years and people were smoking at the restaurant tables.... with the disgusting ashtrays and such,,,,and yet the smokers would holler at some kid for "reaching" too far across the table..
yes,,im a manners Nazi ....
but im old enough to remember when half the table of adults were also smoking..
and I know smoking isn't a "manner" but i think its comical
I agree, the person who corrected the others was rudest.
I think there might be a need to cut the appetizer eaters some slack. In a large group, there will be some who order appetizers, and some who do not. Obviously, those who ordered them will be eating before the others get any food.
I get why madam queen was offended though. we have a friend who will sit down and begin eating before his wife has finished putting things on the table and sits down. He's a nice guy but so couthless.
I can see that most of you are not familiar with eating out in larger groups.
Due to the nature of restaurant service and kitchen preparation, if the first person served waited for the last person to be served, the food would be cold for the first. Not always, but nevertheless it is not customary to wait, unless most of the group has already been served, and the rest of the meals have arrived but not yet been placed. I am speaking of groups of 8 or more.
On the other hand, the person who spoke out was rude as well as incorrect.

If it is that traumatizing to watch someone else take a bite or two of an appetizer perhaps you should not go out to eat with others.

The original poster is not talking about the meal itself only the appetizer.
So those who are served their appetizers first should sit there and let it get cold while waiting for everyone to get their apps? How does that make any sense? What if they didn't order them together?
I ate out with my husband yesterday. My meal came with soup and salad which were served together before our entrees. He didn't have soup or salad. Should I still be sitting there waiting to eat them because he didn't have them? This is just silly! We live in 2015 not 1955.
